driving the passes ... weekday or weekend ?

If I'm going to be spending a day in late June driving the Grimsel, Furka, Susten etc , is there much difference in traffic between a Friday or a Saturday ?

At the moment I'm planning on driving them on the Saturday, but I'm now worried that'll be the day all the caravans etc come out ?

Well if the snow melts and the passes are open, I would prefer to avoid the end of week and week-ends periods. Remember also that at the end of June starts the holiday season with heavy traffic going south.

End of June all should be open + I only have the options of a Friday or a Saturday to drive the route. I'm not too bothered about having clear roads for full on blasts as I'll have my wife as passenger .... just would prefer not to get stuck behind campervans doing 20 mph all the way up some of the best passes in Europe.

if you do any of the passes at weekends then thats exactly what you'll get, campervans and caravans none of whome will pull over and get out of your way.

Some school holidays are already starting late June, so try and do the passes during the week. Fridays in central Europe often are half days so those may not be too good. I do a lot of driving for work and always leave out Mondays and Fridays where possible as these are the long weekend days....

If you are willing and fit, the weather is nice, nothing beats an early morning drive about 0500 a.m. onwards, maybe some fast bikes are with you ;-)
