Are you being sarcastic? - this guy has just drilled a hole in his exhaust?! Hardly fit for a Porsche lol

autospeed.com.au did some tests before/after on their 993 TT with a similar type of mod

http://www.autospeed.com.au/A_111056/cms/article.h...

I can't remember the results in the end, but it was a mixed bag if I remember correctly.

Also not the owner in the post has not just drilled a hole in the exhaust outer skin, but has by-passed an internal run of pipe (ie, punched a hole inside the interior skin of the exhaust as it passes/winds around the main silencer space)

Probably best as with any exhaust, to reduce the absorption material mass/density to get more volume, rather than just try re-work the original manufacturers tuning wrt pulse dynamics, back pressure, volumes and what not while doing NO testing or even wondering why it was the way it was to start with!

The dyno graphs on page 3 do seem to indicate a genuine gain if quite small, a smoother power curve and also no loss of power anywhere across the graph. Just seems an easy way to gain a few HP and a better exhaust note for free. Does the switchable sports exhaust on N/A Porsches not effectivly work in the same way by the flap opening to let some of the exhaust gases escape the main silencer body?

Is this a joke? Is someone really that hard up for cash, which I find astonishing considering they own a 996tt/997tt, originally a 90k super car. Systems come up on ebay or the classifieds all the time, I sold my Cargraphic system for £750, a drop in the ocean considering the cost of the car, if they're that desperate?

I think we'll be seeing more silly mods like this as the value of these cars drop too "dreamer" money.
Mods/chops like this should be conducted on Astra's and escorts, a car as complex as the turbo should be left well alone. If its power they want, get a decent system!

Jeez, I am genuinely surprised these morons have not been removed via natural selection by now

Just because the car was expensive doesn't mean the owner has to ignore a simplistic approach to a viable way to get the car how they want it.
As villageidiot points out, almost all active exhaust system cars today essentially skip that part of the exhaust that the modifier in this case has by-passed themselves... are the manufacturers being lazy and cheap by essentially putting an electronically activated flap over the hole that owner drilled?

"If it's power they want, get a decent system?"

Sounds like some marketing bullst from someone selling £2000+ exhausts to me. Define a decent system without relating to the high price or the marketing mumbo jumbo that comes with it. (ie, some really good independent tests to prove the systems they may have considered *actually* will do a better job than what they have done)

I agree, stupid mods are bad, but this isn't a stupid mod in my honest opinion. Not elegant, but not stupid.

Agreed, would anyone seriously buy a car that someone has drilled a hole in the exhaust of, The mind boggles to think what else they may have done.

Dont buy your tight wad excuse, if it was that easy, there would be alot more exhaust options on the market. Want a performance exhaust, go buy one, cant afford it, sell the damn car.

I thought the stock 7tt exhausts were good for tuned cars to 650bhp with any restiction...

  • or* do it yourself... Porsche made the exhaust down to a cost, and compromised it to try appeal to everyone on the noise front. What better than an exhaust perfect for you, by developing it yourself?
I agree, this is very crude, but it may well be effective. Lets not rule it out just because it was simple. Rule it out IF it is actually not very good (needs to be tested before and after, and even then the perception of the audible pros and cons need to be assessed too)

It's about science and personal preference, not the cost, or idea that anything less than what a tuner offers you at huge cost won't be good enough.

It even seems there are gains available with that mod, which essentially for free is well worth doing if you can live with the sound.

Adding straight pipes off the cats would show you what the real potential of any exhaust is, as a measure to run against. If your getting near that with the noise you want, bonus. I don't think price matters, either of the original car, or the exhaust fitted, to what actually happens.
