Hi All,

Thinking of getting my first 7, have test driven a few and seen a Roadsport CDX for sale. This allows me an almost new car at about £19k. The alternative is to get a Superlight kit ordered, but this won't arrive until the autumn and therefore this summer has gone (and it will cost a good £5/6k more due to me ticking a few boxes)!

Anyone have any opinions on the CDX (spec: 138bhp, 5 speed, Black pack, FIA bar, LSD...) and which way I should jump...probably a common dilemma due to the waiting lists!

Cheers,

Andy

I wouldn't buy a 5 speeder k-series supersport almost new for 19k.

I'd go for a higher spec good condition older car that has more stuff especially a 6 speed box.

Indeed. You could get a decent R300 for that money.

OK so I'm biased but built a CDX at the end of last year and, for me, it's the perfect Caterham spec. The Rover engine in Supersport form is a brilliant revvy, light weight engine, well proven in the Caterham and well matched to the 5 speed box. Having just got back from a thousand mile tour around Brittany on some wonderful roads I can't imagine a better combination of car, engine and gearbox for the price.

As I said I'm biased; I raced a 120 bhp Roadsport for three years and I never really felt the need for a lot more power. Similarly I wanted to retain decent road manners and comfort and the five speed box, leather seats and weather kit is all on the list. Lastly it has the new metric Chasis, warranty, LSD and, in my case quite a few extras which I specced (wide track, stack, rear ARB) none of which were essential but were things that I knew I'd fit eventually.

Are there downsides compared to a new Ford engined car? Well probably compared to say the new Duratec but these start at around £30,000 so a lot more money. As far as the Rover against the 125 Ford, I'd take the Rover. Probably against the 150 bhp Ford as well as this still doesn't seem to be a fully resolved set-up.

If you have any more detailed questions feel free to e-mail.

Some might say the CDX is/was a cynical ploy to use up all those old K Series engines....I spoke to someone who bought a CDX at a huge (and I mean huge) discount to the sticker price. Nowhere near the fainlty ludicrous £19k you appear to be looking to pay for that car!

Odd that a motorsport-biased model such as the CDX ought to then be fitted with the caravan-towing 5 speed gearbox. My first Caterham was a 5 speed 138 bhp Supersport and TBH the ratios didn't suit it at all...on road or on track.

I have a 135bhp Supersport with a six speed box, uprated AP's widetrack and superlight suspension - £16k from Caterham, only 4500 miles and just had big service and going over etc.

It's one of the cars we rent out and for me at least is just the most fun spec for road use. Andrew who runs a hire co in Scotland also has customers who've had a couple of cars out at the same time K series vs Sigma come back and say the K series is more fun.

I found Caterham Midlands excellent at establishing your needs then finding the rght spec.

Bit heavy going over 80mph but fab fun up to that and the supersport spec kicking in at about 5000 rpm.

Good luck with your choice and drop us a note if you'd like a try of on ein Yorkshire

It's interesting that Caterham won't let the newer Sigma cars (supposedly 125 bhp) race against the old spec 118 bhp K series cars in any of their official series. Word is that the K series is quicker which would be a tad embarrassing for the marketing boys.

With the 150 bhp Sigma still something of a premium product they probably won't mix the newer cars with the old until they can release a cost effective and reliable upgrade for the Sigma 125 and be sure it can beat the boggo K series.

Given the SS spec has more power (even if the headline 135 or 138 bhp is highly optimistic with the standard exhaust) it represents excellent value when available brand new at a significant saving on the Sigma engined car.

Well, I think so anyway!

Anyone wants to know the answer on ford vs kseries, check out the grads class stucture for supers, Ford will get their own class, as they arent consideredd fast enough to be competitive against the K's.

Newer isnt always better. I think the CDX fits a good niche, cynically it helps offload the old engines - true, but thats not the end of the story.
