Have normal practice amp (orange) and guitars + a keyboard (an old yamaha).

Would like to experiment with recording the output of the keyboard and guitar amp to my PC and mixing tracks to write/make songs.

Want something free and easy to use. If it's all fruitful then I'll consider something more expensive and elaborate. For now though, I want something really simple to use if possible.

Any suggestions?

Audacity?

Amp or FX into your sound card, bit of balancing, hit record and you're away. From there you could probably look at more specific software

Don't know how easy this will be to do for 'free'. You will need a decent soundcard, then i guess some VST software such as Cubase for the mixing stuff.

I have had some pretty good results over the last few years with home recording of mainly guitar orientated music (i.e. Metal) and althogh minimal, i did need to fork out on a few things, or in the case of teh stereo amp, forage around in teh loft or the bedrooms. If you want semi decent results you may need to consider the following -

some Virtual Studio software
Soundcard
a pre amp to pass your signal throigh before going into the PC
Some VST instrument software such as Guitar Rig. Brilliant piece of kit i must say smile
relevant leads
A bigger hard drive
Decent Stereo Amp for playback
Decent speakers, preferably monitors, but i find my trusty old mission 760is do the trick

Probably not the reponse you were expecting but I spent no money and found the best sound I got was from my DV Cam! Certainly sounds better than my POD.

I used cooledit as it did what I wanted in a nice easy way.

The new Propellorhead "Record" software looks to be right up yr passage - it has Line 6 guitar + bass modelling built in ready, and it supposed to be inuitive to use.
