I am considering buying a 51 plate TT, the 225bhp model hardtop for 7k.
Has anybody got any advice on what to lookout for? I am aware of the problem with the dash lights/needles etc but does anybody own a similar model and have any advice for me??

Thanks in advance!

Top mounts
Roll bars
Dampers
Springs
Coilpacks
Crap paint/accident damage
Worn bolsters
Airbag lights
Rubbish service history

Have a search on here for those and you'll find plenty - it's been discussed a few times recently I think.

Thanks for the help, will have a good read through so Im clued up for when I go to see it. I know its going to be expensive to tax but I dont think theres going to be a cheap tax option for a 8 year old sports car? I also looked at S2000's and Lotus Elise Mk1's but am being drawn towards the TT.

I'd recommned you drive one as you've quoted some pretty thoroughbred stuff (Elie/S2000).

The Mk1 TT drives like the hatchback underpinnings it is based on in comparison.

I'd like to know how you get on on this one. I think TTs are lovely cars but I've never had the pleasure of driving one. However, I can offer my two cents on the S2000, gorgeous car to drive, if you are considering one then drive one.

I thought they'd changed it to 2006 on.

Correct - over 225g/km and manufactured 23/03/2006 onward now attracts ouch road tax.

My two penneth. I test drove TT sport 240, I have always liked the look, don't think it has dated much, despite the newer model, and at 6' 4", with fully adjustable steering (reach and rake), I fitted comfortably, unlike S2000 and z4. Lovely detailing inside the cabin, very nice place to be, Quattro sport I tried had standard seats, as the recaros looked uncomfortable (dicky back me), I have say driving back to back with a '02 Boxster S (which was the only other sporty number I fitted in comfortably with, I do alot of long motorway runs) the TT was great right up & till the steering which had the perfectly adequate, but lacking feel steering, slight understeer pressing hard, I've had in my current golf, previous A3 and Passat. While the Porsche's interior was not quite as nice, but the steering felt as though my palms were flat on the tarmac.

Boxster was more pleasurable, but I still wouldn't rule out the Mk1 TT, as I think it will be cheaper to buy, service independently and live with, & you can retro fit cruise dirt cheap, and it would definitely fit in my garage having a golf-ish foot print. While a 987, I have my eye on, might be a tad wide, although Cayman S' are beginning to be old enough, getting close to my absolute limit on budget. Sitting in one, it had a very TT ambience although I bet a hoot to drive.

I have always fancied a TT and I just feel that for the price you are getting the full package, just a genuinely good car for everyday use....hope the golf clubs fit in though!!
I dont think it has the recaros, they are the standard seats but in leather? And I am 6' 3" so hope I fit in comfortably, will report back.

Cheers guys

Watch out for the cam chain tensioner.

If there is any rattling run away. Relatively common and semi-expensive to fix.

Just had to do mine. Ah well.

Hi,

As a TTR Owner, here are the things to look out for based on my experiences.

Plenty around for sale - so make sure you are fussy. Target a vehicle with FSH - does not have to be Audi, just make sure it has had cambelt / waterpump done at the correct time - Haldex oil and filter changes should be done - this can be problematic if negelected. If you find a car with FSH,and it has had dashpod problems - it will be documented in the history. Common fault with the dashpod is erratic fuel indication and temp indicator. Check "aliens" which are headlight washers - these are problematic, and if they do not work - likely there has been an issue and someone has removed the fuse ( this happened with mine - found out after I bought the car).

I made sure I bought one with extensive history - with all historical problems documented, there are cars around like this - you just need to find them,so be patient.

Had my car a year now - totally fun to drive and relatively cheap to run.

Good Luck

Well I drove the car and it was a fantastic ride, solid as a rock, brakes were fantastic and it handled well.....however I am biding my time and waiting for a better one. My reason for not purchasing was the dealer, the car needed 2 new front tyres as they were beyond illegal, it also had no tax and no MOT but he wouldnt budge on his price, he said he had 3 other people coming to look at it and he wouldnt drop the price.
I loved the car, it had 80000 on the clock and everything worked, 15mins into the test drive and the dash was perfect, no knocking from suspension, all electrics worked. It had recently had new discs/pads/timing and fan belts fitted so it was really hard to walk away but I just think theres a principle here, I mean he wouldnt even knock a penny off the price?!

Am I being daft here or doing the right thing?? Surely theres plenty of decent ones to choose from out there?

Hi,

You are not being daft - why would a retailer expect you to spend £7k and not supply 12 months of valid MOT. At the very least ths guy should put 12 months ticket on the vehicle and should probs give you some warranty. If the car feels like the right thing you should insist on some peace of mind.

Does it have any SH? What is the history of the vehicle? Does the dealer have any receipts / service history other than the service booklet?

Push the dealer for some answers - if he is not forth coming he is likely hiding something. Is the dealer reputable in your area and does he have a good reputation? Unless you are totally happy with what the dealer is telling you - walk away. There are plenty of other cars around - don't spend your £7k unless you are totally happy with the dealer / private sale .

Hi, the only history he had was the Audi service book, however it only had stamps up until 2005 (30,000 miles). After that it has been serviced privately and the only other paperwork was the reciepts for the work to the discs/pads and belts.
He said he wouldnt even put 6 months tax on it?! My main problem is that he isnt local, I travelled 75 miles to look at the car and the guy sounded genuine on the phone but I felt let down after visiting him.
Nevermind, the search goes on....
