Scrappage Sends Classics To The Heap

Hyundai reveals some of the victims of scrappage

With the first week of the controversial scrappage scheme drawing to a close, Hyundai has decided to reveal what sort of metal is being sent to the scrap heap and it doesn’t make for particularly pleasant reading.

Amongst the causalities include six MX-5s, seven MGFs and a Jaguar XJ-S. German barges haven’t escaped the scrap battle either, with 34 BMWs, 22 Audis and 32 Mercedes all apparently on their way to the heap in the name of the scrappage scheme.

Nissan Micras have so far proved the most popular car to be scrapped at Hyundai dealerships since the scheme was introduced on Monday, with over 200 making way for a new car.

However an MG Midget, Nissan 300ZX, MGB GT and (we regret to inform you) a Fiat X1/9 have also been scrapped. Not all manufacturers have been as open as Hyundai over what they’ve been receiving, and although some cars will be dismantled in order to further the life of other classics it does hurt to tell you that a 1968 Morris Minor has also succumbed to the lure of £2k off a new car.

It isn’t, however, the scrappage scheme’s oldest victim, a 1966 Austin 1100 was also handed over.

All a little bit sad. I know of a Volvo 850R that'll be heading towards the crusher soon and it does make me think that it's such a shame. Imagine if they'd done this 30 years ago. Mk1 Escorts, early Mini Coopers and even some E-Types would have all gone.

The cars need a MOT, so they could them be sold on. But the likeliness or anyone behind the scenes knowing the true value or how rare a car is low unfortunately.

People keep suggesting I scrub the E30 in, but its in bloody good nick, I'd rather use it for an other year and sell her for £1000 to someone else who will look after her.

I'm not sure where my first post on this subject went.....

However,

The great unwashed just see this as 'Ooohhhh, £2000 for my old car, i must get chucked up beyond my means for a shiny new shopping car'

The majority of people who this applies to are only driving an older car as they can't afford anything else.

Watch the amount of finance reposessions in 12-18 months with cars bought under this scheme.

Hopefully this wil rid the roads of Neon's, Mk1 Cavaliers, 2.3 Diesel Sierra's infact any Sierra bar the Coswort

Please also ALL Nova's/.

One other good thing is that at this low end lots of cars which would normally go to chavs will now be crushed thank you.

Sadly other good cars will be wasted early - mind you I cannot see them removing that many cars from the road. Odd though that the car has to have an MOT imagine if it just failed its MOT sorry no payout.

And when was the last time you can remember seeing a Mk1 Cavalier on the road? Do you even realise which car you are talking about?

The cars need to be MOT'd OR SORN.

Removing old XJS fro the roads to be replaced by Hyundai i10s is crazy.

Oddly, I think my shopper, the Metro Rio, may be safe, I really can't be arsed to pay out for a new car at the moment and I'd miss old Rio if she went

Looking seriously at this scheme say you do have a right banger and want a new car clearly his scheme benefits buying the newest cheapest car which meets your needs.

Now that cheapest newest car would be a Kia Picanto (which is a perfectly fine car with air con) so a brand new car with years warranty for £4.5k seems suddenly to make a hell of a lot of sense. Ditto those C1's Aygo etc.

Clearly buying bigger car it doesnt make so much of a difference but £4.5k depn assuming zero value at 37 months is a mere £125pcm. Now 'd say after th 36 months this car would easily see a good ten years but even if not its far cheaper than leasing and as said its a perfectly fine car for pottering/commuting/weekly shop.

You know they could have been a bit smarter here.

If they are sent for scrap i presume its to be recycled? Well would they be getting more money for scrap or more money if they sold them off?

It's tragic if they do crush them, to think of decent drivers cars like those mentioned being scrapped, what are these people trading them in for, Hyundai don't even make the 2.7 coupe anymore do they?

I was going to ask the exact same thing? I'd assume they'd completely crush the car, as one of the 'reasons' given for the scheme was to promote the use of modern, environmentally friendly, fuel efficient vehicles, and so they wouldn't want to make the parts available for others to maintain their 'old, noisy and polluting' cars.
Please tell me I'm wrong though, as I'd love a new source of salvaged parts.
