Evening men.

My B6 S4 has just passed the 80k mark and is due a service, I was going to do it myself but have spotted in the service book that at 80k it says V8 engines required a cambelt change.

Firstly: I thought this engine ran a cam chain?

Secondly: How much roughly is this going to cost me? The car is at an Audi dealer for some warranty work on Wednesday so might get them to do it at the same time but being dole scum any saving I can make is a bonus.

Thirdly: What cause the god-awful rattle when you start it from cold? It only last 1 second but is annoying me, I was under the impression it was an unlubed cam chain but if it has a belt not a chain it's not that.

Lastly: Does anyone know any decent Audi specialist that could do the work for reasonable price in the Westcountry (Bristol/Gloucester area)

Any advice on the above would be a big help.

save your money.....

Its a cam chain, not a belt.

And many of them make the noise on the start up, it's a trait of the engine (cam chain as you said)

Thats what I thought (and why I didn't worry when I bought it) are the lesser (non S4) V8's on a belt? Or is an error in the manual?

I don't worry about the noise it's been the same for the last 20k not got any worse.

Fitted for life, but I suppose everything has a life span. By the time they go, they won't be worth changing.

There has been some issues with tensioners leaking oil while standing, and causing a rattle on start up. Audi changed the oil recommended for the car, to try and help. And some (like mine at 11,000 miles) were changed under warranty. I have some photos of mine while it was out, but the photo I posted is of someone else's off RS246, while it was having the same work done.

Thankyou guys. I won't be getting it done then.

I may mention the tensioner rattle and see if I can get that done under warranty as well.
