I went to see a car, nice motor, 1995 Mercedes SL320, its got a digital odometer.

Is it possible to 'clock' these to show less miles? Or can the digital odometer be trusted?

Any and every car can be clocked mate. Does it have full service history/ old MOT's to verify mileage?

Its got some history, invoices and some MOT's, but no service book (although I know of one unscrupulous chap that makes up service history with a fake rubber stamp).

I just wonder if digial odometers are easily clocked.

Is it a laptop-plug-in-OBD easily changeable thing?

Yep - there are people who advertise their services to "correct" digital speedos and odometers. Few hundred quid in cash and they'll turn up with a laptop and "correct" your odometer to whatever you like....

At least with the analogue clocks it's usually possible to spot clocking (numbers don't line up true etc).

It's the bits that make human contact you should pay attention to. Gear knob, steering wheel, bolsters, these all give the game away yes

sorry mate but people can clock analogue clocks.do not know how but i think they strip them down and put them back together rather than force them.hence the numbers can and do line up

Indeed but its a lot more effort than plugging in a laptop and typing in the mileage you want...

Use this website to verify mileage, you will need the reg number/v5 cert no and or the mot cert. number though, hope this helps http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/internet/jsp/ECHID-Inter...

chap on another forum, found out his audi had been clocked with this helpful website. It only goes back to computerisation in 2006 i think.

I dont know if this is true but here goes:

Apparently when you go to a BMW dealership, they use data from your key, they plug it into a key reader, gives your chassis no. mileage, service info etc.

Even if you 'clock' the dash odometer, the true mileage is still logged in the ECU and Key! so if you ever want to check if it all stacks up on your bmw, just take your key to a dealership!

on some cars the mileage is also stored in the CEM also, had a car in that was 2 years old for a warranty issue, speedo showed 11k ish looking at the car it had all different tyres on all 4 corners the brake discs and pads were shot, bonnet stone chipped, looked in the CEM module showed 90k ish ! and fault code stored said mileage manipulated ! mentioned to customer (lease company) they picked the car up straight away ! never to be seen again.
