Unless anyone has a 6-speed Caterham gearbox surplus to requirements and going for a song (yeah, right laugh), I think I'll go back to plan A and source a close ratio 5-speed type 9 box for my 1600 K-series engine (see my earlier topic "1400 K Series De-Dion: Standard Diff Ratio").
Question: Is the input shaft of a type 9 box the standard Ford item, or is it modified in some way to fit the bearing in the back end of the K-series crankshaft?

for my Caterham k series bell housing it had to be a long shaft k type 9 (still have a very nice std shaft sitting in the shed ) you will also need to grind a few mm off the end off the end of your newly acquired long input shaft gearbox. caterham will tell you exactly how many mm as I cant remember

Thanks tvralfagtv6.
One quetsion always leads to another....
.... Do you know, or does any one know, how long a type 9 'long' input shaft is? Where measured from/to?

You might be as well giving Road Race Transmissions a call. I suspect they'll be able to go through all the options.

Is the move away from the 6spd due to cost? And are you sure you've added them all up equivalently?

Hi Murph
Yes, I'm reconsidering the close-ratio 5 speed option on the grounds of cost. Such boxes come up on the second-hand market quite often for well under a grand, whereas, good though I'm sure it is, the Caterham 6-speed unit is something like £2700 with VAT, and I don't suppose they come onto the second-hand market too often (once you've got one, why would you sell it!)
I might give Road Race Transmissions a call and see what they have to say.
Cheers

Are they really 2700GBP these days? They used to be about 1600-1700 new.

And they do come up for sale 2nd hand, usually 1000-1200.

Have a chat with Road Race. Think they usually know of any for sale. Certain someone mentioned to me that there may be a number coming up as sequential boxes were starting to be used in racing...though could have made that up!

Interesting point about racers going over to 6-speed sequential, Murph.
A reply to the "How can I get an R500 (duratec) quickly?" topic suggests that most people buying the Duratec R500 are going sequential too.
If a well-healed owner higher up the Caterham food chain than I, who wants to succumb to that upgraditis itch to buy a 6-speed sequential, he might find a buyer for his 6-speed H-gate box amongst those of us further down the chain... wink

Last year the C400's went from the 6-speed to the sequential Quaife box. Caterham offered a £750 parts credit for trading in the old box which as far as I'm aware virtually everyone took. I'd imagine they disappeared into circulation, although still that would only make up 17 or 18 gearboxes in total.

C400's also used to munch them at a rate of 2 or 3 rebuilds a year, so I wouldn't have one in my road car unless it had come with a fresh rebuild.

I swapped from a Caterham-specific 1.6 K-series to a MG-sourced 1.8 VVC K-Series and had to grind about 8-10mm off the input shaft on the new engine to get it to fit the Type 9.

Guys - thanks for inputs on type-9 shaft length and possible 6-speed box availability. I'm now undecided so will keep an open mind and keep looking.
