It still baffles me why 'casual' drivers in their cars manage to stay between the white lines, but it's a skill that lies beyond the reach of professional drivers in their lorries?????

I think a lot of it is a mental thing. When you change lane, you look ahead to see if it's clear in the lane you're moving into.
But people think, 'I've got a problem, I'll move into the hard shoulder' - and don't bother to check if its clear of stationary vehicles.

Most lorries use the inside lane most of the time. Watch them - it's amazing how many veer onto the rumble strip. It only takes a few inches and your 40 foot long artic has wiped out whoever is on the hard shoulder.

We talked a while back about speed limiters and the effect they have on the driver of HGVs - specifically it sends them to sleep...
