Help identifying an artist and tune from the 80's

A female artist who used her voice as a backing throughout singing 'haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa, haa" all the way through with vocals over the top.

Quite a big hit - an American woman I think. Very strange but oddly catchy tune which for the life of me I can't remember who by, early 80's maybe.

Any thoughts?
