I'm looking for a big family chariot, sensible with a bit of style and at least a little go to match.I've been looking at T5's,had them previously, but can't really see anything within 300 miles of me....then I start thinking mmmmmm Audi,I had an A4 2.6 years ago loved it to bits.
Question -Is the 1.8 turbo A6 not a little underpowered for the car size am I better looking for 2.5tdi?
My budget is 4k very tops so we are talking around the 2000/2001 vintage probably.
Thanks for any advice.

ps there's a 2.7 biturbo close to where i live,in fact far too close....but i fear it may be a money pit though ???

If you want more power, then go for the 2.5tdi, I'm sure insurance isn't an issue if your looking at that sort of car anyway.

I'll rephrase the question, there is a couple of 1.8 t A6's local ish at a good price(ie cheaper than 1.9 or 2.5 tdi's),is the petrol 1.8 turbo any good in a car that size?

Do a search for posts by ISTOO. He had an A6 avant with the 1.8t engine and may have posted about it on here. If he's not on holiday he'll be along soon I imagine. I drove it once two up and with two heavy mountain bikes in the back and it felt plenty fast enough. It was remapped though so probably had close to 200bhp.

Hi

I've recently bought an A6 1.8T Avant 2001/X. Have to say it is a great car.

I sold on my BMW 328i convertible for something more practical and ok the A6 is slower but it's no slouch.

Only on the odd occassions have I been caught out . . . wrong gear/not on turbo. Probably more to do with my driving.

In all there ain't much I'd change. Mines got 74k on the clock, FASH, gunmetal grey with perfect black sports leather. I paid £2900.00 for it. Reckon I got lucky as I was the first to see it and the phone was riniging off the hook whilst I was there.

also concur i had one for 4 years as a family wagon. A basic 1.8T S£ avant and it was a brillaint family car. i also had reservations about it being underpowered at the time and was surprised it has plenty of oomph. A year after purchasing it I remapped it which made it quite swift and managed a few 40mpg runs over 100+ miles with it in that tune.

The 2.5 tdi, do the research. I had an A4 2.5tdi quattro sport as well. Good engine when they go but prone to some expensive bills. The lower power ones probably make a better buy imho. I wouldn't discount a 1.9tdi 130.

We replaced the A6 avant with a 530d touring, I would have another C5 A6, well built very utilitarian car, the FWD smaller engined ones make excellent family cars. Wife found it a little on the big side for car parks, and the SE seats don't hold you awfully well. Other than that i have little issues with the A6.

The 1.8T and 2.5 are fast enough. If you're getting an auto then try to avoid the multitronics.

The 2.7T is in another league for speed and refinement.

Yes!

But I would look for a FSH, changing of belts, good oil throughout its life. There are a lot of these about so pick well!
A 1.8T sport variant would be my choice. I recall a facelift circa 2002 and the SE got a suspension overhaul, I would aim for one of those. I found the earlier cars to be a bit softer. The 1.8T itself comes in a huge amount of tune, and there is a mountain of information/ spares etc available for the car. Generally it averaged 34mpg for the most part. boot it and it was awful but on a run would see 40mpg on occasion. Ours hauled wife 3 kids, mountain bikes, trips to southern France (from north of scotland) no problem at all. The 1.8T is very tunable and you can go nuts with it, but a remap gave me the extra few mpg to actually pay for itself, plus the difference in performance was significant.

I missed your post Pablo16v, thats what you should have bought over the slab!
