A fair bit of effort of late with not much to show but here's a couple just to show I haven't been completely idle
BTW - Thanks for the link LQ I had no idea a spare battery would be so cheap
ETA - quick re-edit of the first pic which was way too dull

Nice work.Happy to have provided the link dd. I too was amazed when I saw how little one might have to pay. Decided to take the plunge (the first one about 4 years ago now I suppose) and so far for my Canon Pro 1 and 400D plus a Pentax Optio S5i and some Canon Ixus pocket things I have not had one duff battery. Indeed the cheapos seem to perform better than the originals as often as not.
Now I had read similar statements before buying and concluded that it was BS of the first order but that at a few quid a time there was little to lose.
As it has turned out there has been nothing at all to lose and the compatibles seem to set a very high standard.

Since I dragged the 65mm all the way to Brisbane might as well shoot something with it.
Ladies and gents, I present you the stalk of one of the most dangerous stinging trees on the planet. The Gympie Gympie.
I didn't know the planet had ANY stinging trees let alone more than one type.Ladies and gents, I present you the stalk of one of the most dangerous stinging trees on the planet. The Gympie Gympie.
Dangerous stuff, nature.
A not-very-remarkable pic of a rose

But the lack of dust spots was pleasing - I took one like this a while back that had loads of them so I bought one of these rocket blower things and by 'eck it works

So due to being stuck offshore since thursday (been here 24 days so far) and having this thread to read, I've just bought a Canon 100mm F2.8 lens.
What sort of flash do you guys use? I was considering buying a normal flash head and mounting it on an arm attached to the camera. I don't have one just now and could use it for other things. Or do I really need a ring flash?
There's a chance I'll get home tomorrow and stop shopping, spare time offshore with internet access is expensive...

Depends how much you want to spend really - the Canon Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX is the daddy I believe but it's £700ish which seems rather a lot to me! I use a Marumi ring flash - not as good but miles cheaper (mine cost £80 second hand on eBay). What sort of flash do you guys use? Getting a decent flash transformed Macro photography for me - it allows you to stop down far enough to get a decent depth of field but still shoot at 1/200 (with, say, f16). Without a decent flash it's a fking fiddly business!
Dug out the macro kit tonight and did some close-ups on the tree decorations - they came out all creepy

That last decoration does look a bit frightening.
The best will have to wait when it comes to flashes, I think I'll go on ebay and look for the ring flash.
Does the normal flash on a bracket give reasonable results? I don't have one yet and could use it for more things, like people (if I ever take pictures fo people).
