I spend early June driving around Scotland. It’s so enjoyable to drive to the conditions of the environment rather than arbitrary traffic laws!

Nice pics. Was in Scotland about a year ago, had to cut the trip short, want to go back and do it again and do this bits we missed, and this just makes me want to do it more... just need to persuade Mrs Lasertam.

Those pics brought back memories - thank you! I learnt to drive in Caithness. Haven't been back for many years now, but i really miss those roads. You missed my favourite section, the Causeymire (pronounced cazzie-mire) on the A9 from Spittal to Latheron. It's a really desolate place with peat workings, and now has a wind farm, but it is a fantastic bit of road with visibility of miles in places.

However, you managed to take in a significant amount of some of the best black-top this country has to offer!

Some great scenery up there. Been thinking of going to Scotland for a while now. Will probably have to later this year.

Nice little write up Pete, thanks for the photos too. thumbup

Some questions if I may -

1. Nice to see you can do that much of Scotland in 6 days - was it long days or still leisurely driving ?

2. Are the roads bumpy ? - some of the photos looked a bit like that.

3. Did you have to book yourself onto the ferry or did you just turn up ?

Keep promising myself a Scottish trip and might be able to go for 9 days or so in a weeks time - fingers crossed !!

1) Very leisurely driving - you could do more per day.

2) You will be surprised how good the roads are. I live in south London and the roads in the highlands are very good - even the single track ones. The only exception to this I have found was on the Isle of Mull. But anything north of Fort William is fine.

3) Most ferrys are just turn up and go.

4) A tip - don't take £20 notes as 4 times I gave people £20s and had to press them for change as they all mistakely thought I had given them a £10 note ...

Below are some pictures from two other trips - different (longer) routes but just as much fun..

Thanks for sharing the photos. Can't wait to go back myself. I've been there in February this year with two friends. The single lanes were fantastic, but also all of the more open roads. Well actually, only the motorways were a bit boring. laugh
It was great to see a policeman driving 100+ mph in front of us. Too bad we only had 4 days from Newcastle and back, but it was well worth it, still.

Some of my photos on the link below:

Last photo shows the damage to the front of the VX of 4 days of Scotland. Somehow I got the car sold a bit later. biggrin
Planning on going again next year. Although I'll wait for warmer weather than.

Good pics Allen - it looks like you saw your fair share of mist!

Looks like a fantastic trip. I'd love to do something like that myself but, living in London, Scotland seems like a hell of a long way away. I realise there's a slight irony to saying that (reading the posts above) ...I guess I'm just lazier!

I had my fair share of mist, indeed. I can only remember a few moments of a clear blue sky.
Went to Wales a year before and I must say... the weather was just as bad. Guess that's uk at its finest? biggrin

People who visit me usually fly to Inverness (just over an hour) and hire a car. The good roads (mostly west coast) start only an hour distant from Inverness. http://www.stevecarter.com/picaday/roads.htm

I've looked at your pictures before - they are just fantastic - especially the last one with the snow covered road in the forest. clap

Lybster harbour - really lovely and when you get down to the harbour there's a little tea shop. Here are some of the harbour.
