How crap is that??!!

Setting off to drive MrsTwo and the two JrTwos from London to Coventry on Saturday, DIS says 25 miles range and gauage not yet in the red, on my way to the petrol station. Car starts shaking and hesitating. Engine warning light comes on, I pull into Tesco car park and wait for the AA. I am convinced it's a coil pack. AA guy gets there, checks the coil packs, checks fuses, plugs in laptop. Missfire cylinder 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. When was the last time you filled up? Oh. Cue me running to petrol station in thunder shower and coming back to find that I had run out of petrol.

What ever happened to having a reserve? In future I shall be filling up when it gets to anything below 50 miles on the DIS.

Blimey that is surprising. I've had mine down to very low (it's on 25 at the moment I think!). I assumed you'd still have some miles even at zero.

Have you had it down there before?

I seem to remember it calculated the mileage left based on your last 40 miles of driving MPG - so perhaps they last 40 miles avg were significantly different? No hang on that can't really work. I assume you weren't going guns-blazing?

Most of these systems allow a couple of litres left (up to a gallon) when the range computer says zero...

I have driven around on my past car with 0 miles (a Skoda) for 30 miles before stopping.

And I usually wait until it is down to zero before getting more, to keep the tank clean.

I've always found the fuel gauges to be quite accurate on all the Audis I've owned.

However, I did somehow manage to drive around 15 miles with the DIS showing '0' and then managed to put in 71 litres (into a 70 litre tank).

When I started it that morning the fuel warning came on. This was the first time it did so and you would expect it to do this well in advance of running out. On my old S3, I could run it to zero and it would still work fine.

I did read somewhere that the tank size was smaller on the later S4s. After running out I put 5L in from the can and another 50L from the pump so this would tally. Also, I often seem to find that the pump cuts out when trying to fill up, even if their is plenty more to go. It seems you need to be very careful about the angle you put the nozzle in. Does anyone else notice this?

The most I've ever got in mine ('54 plate, registered Jan 2005) is 60 litres and that was very very empty.

I don't seem to get any problems of the pump clicking off during the fill - and tend to only fill to the first click. I used to go all the way to the top but read somewhere it's best not too, because if you fill the pipe too it leaves little (if no) room for any expansion with temperature.

The filler neck can be a pain, I ususally hold the nozzle out so the first notch on the pump is on the edge of the filler.

To be honest mine is usually running on 0-10 miles range in the tank and have driven plenty of miles on 0 miles and never ran out of fuel.

I've run mine down to zero dozens of times, and even played fuel bingo for a good 20 miles when on zero, I've only ever run out once in 3 years and it was my own fault for getting caught out by a garage I thought would be open and that I could make it to which wasn't, I then coughed en route to the next gargage and had to walk the last bit frown but I've certainly never experienced it as you describe, the gauge should go off the bottom of the red and as I say 15-20 miles is safe when reading zero, but Tony it is possible to get nearly 65 litres in the 60 litre tank when you really kick the arse out of it.

I've really got to have more confidence at fuel light bingo smile

which makes marco's predicament very strange.

Had my range down to 10 miles quite a few times with no issues. Had you been driving gently and then really sped up for the last few miles? If so then the DIS would have been confused.

I'd been on the motorway for most of the journey and then the last few miles in town. The thing is, even ignoring the DIS, the gauge was not showing empty, maybe aroud 10%?

Believe me you get enough warning it's about to go when it coughs and splutters (oh the voice of experience) wink

My fuel light comes on when there is 30 miles to go, I've done a good 10 miles after it says zero (on the way back from Pistonfest) don't know how much longer it would have gone before it ran out.

I had about 5 minutes of intermittent engine warning light / imbalance vibration / no power. After that, and a couple of starts and revs from the AA guy, it was totally dead and would not start.

Other symptoms included air con fans always running at minimum (which I also had when my battery died) and a whining sound when I first started it up.

Once I put petrol in it everything was back to normal.

Blimey, if my car started doing any of those things I think I'd have a heart attack with worry!

I suspect there's something else, I can only base this on the experience of running one out of fuel but it basically coughed spluttered stopped, started again did a few hundred yards coughed spluttered stopped, no lights, no imbalance, no loss of power, just a normal running out of petrol feeling. (but I will say that the air con was off because I knew I was running on vapour and I was driving like a nun trying to get every last drop out of it)
