After enjoying Wadeski's offering on the "Gin" Thread, I've waited in anticpation to see if anyone was going to start a Cocktail Thread.

However as they haven't (and the weekend is approaching) I'll start us off with Wadeski's

Wadeski said:
GIN BASIL SMASH

you need:

1 large jamjar
a rolling pin or pestle
one seive
half a lemon
a generous handful of fresh basil
a teaspoon of fine sugar or sugar syrup
a double shot of good gin like Hendrick's
ice

put the basil and the half lemon in the jamjar and crush with the rolling pin using a twisting motion to get the juice out. Add the sugar and stir with a spoon.

taste it - it should taste sweet-sour...adjust the sugar as necessary.

fill the jamjar with ice and pour in the gin. be generous.

put the lid on the jamjar and give it a damn good shake for about a minute.

pour through the strainer into a tumbler with ice in it.

you should get a bright green, herby, moreish, boozy cocktail.

Enjoy your Gin Basil Smash

This one is *lovely*

Ginger Monkey

3 parts dry ginger ale
2 parts Monkey Shoulder whisky (about 50ml)
optional: agnostura bitters
A thick wedge of orange
Ice

fill a tumbler with ice. add the wedge. pour in the ginger ale.

float the whisky on top and, if you like, the small dash of bitters.

its dangerous because even after a few, you can still make them as good as the first one...

Like this but with a small dash of Madeira wine or sweet sheery floated on top. I don't usually bother with salt either.

I'd forgotten about those lick

I've was once being given apple mojitos at a BBQ, very refreshing

Made from a bottle of Bacardi which had been left with rasins soaking in it
Similar to above but with apple juice + a few of the plump raisins which exploded in you mouth like depth charges!

Icing sugar?

Bloody icing sugar? Is that when you make them with Value White Rum?

Sugar syrup - make your own

Its probably one of the hardest cocktails to get perfectly right the Mojito.

I find the trouble is with the fresh lime, you never seem to get two the same. The recipe I use also uses a dash of Angustora Bitters. The mint needs to be new shoots as well, the woody leaves don't release enough oil.

Tequila Sunrise, very easy:

2 measures gold tequila, 4 measures fresh orange juice (Tropicana), add crushed ice to glass and stir, slowly add one half measure of Grenadine and let it sink to the bottom.

B52

Kahlua, float Bailys, float Grand Marnier.

They taste lovely and the first 4 have no effect whatsoever.

Number 5 however, they all gang up on you.

I still really fancy trying Le Earthquake - measure of Absinthe and a measure of Brandy in the same glass.

Speaking of Brandy.

Port and Brandy - probably the simplest and most comforting cocktail there is.

Flaming Lamborghini

1 measure of Kahlua
1 measure of Sambuca
1 measure Blue Curacao
1 measure Baileys
In a large Martini glass add the Kahlua and Sambuca. Fill 2 shot glasses, one with Blue Curacao and the other with Baileys. Light the Kahlua and Sambuca with a match, hand the drinker a straw drink and tell them to drink the cocktail in one. When they have nearly reached the bottom put out the flame by adding the Blue Curacao and Baileys and tell them to finish off the drink.
