Ok,

Just updated to v.2.2 and now when I do a destination search via a postcode, it only lets me do the first 4 characters then demands a street name?!??!

Is there any option that I need to change to get it to go back to how it was before the "upgrade" when I could punch in a full postcode....

Never tried it on a genuine TT1 device, but having used TomTom on MANY other devices, what this normally comes down to is:
1. Does the map data have postcode information. If it's your same maps as before, then the answer's yes.
2. Does the application you're running support postcodes. I'm guessing this is the issue - the version you've "upgraded" to isn't a UK 7-digit postcode version. You quite often get this with older versions, or non-UK targeted ones. Why it thinks it's an "upgrade" to give you that is an odd one.

And yes, I do agree, I was most frustrated that the "upgrade" appeared to fail to have a full postcode search !!! But it looks like it's fixed now, so thanks chaps.

Tom Tom is actually pretty good with things like this it seems. Quite pleasing really.
