Good Afternoon,

I am thinking of buying this car - there are a couple of things I wanted some advice on:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1997-AUDI-A4-2-8-QUATTRO-BLU...

a. Central Locking not functional - apparently there is a leak in the air system. The pump can be heard running but the locks do not operate - is this an easy fix?
b. Cambelt and water pump replaced in Aug 07 at 80k miles (now on 96k miles) - when will it need replacing again and is it dependant on age or mileage or both?
c. Clutch is fine in operation but the biting point is near the top of the pedal travel - is this an Audi trait or something to worry about?
d. Car has FSH up to 80k and then serviced by the owner's Father in law who is a local mechanic - I have receipts for parts but obviously no labour (lucky guy!) - based on this, according to the servicing schedule, is there anything that will need doing in the near future?

The car is in good condition and everything works as advertised (bar central locking) - for a 600 mile weekly commute on motorways, is this a good buy? Thinking of offering £1250 to take into account the Central Locking.

Thanks for your help.

(a) Its an easy fix if you know where the leak is. Other wise virtually impossible. Is usually the pump/control units that fail, just cos the pump runs doesn't mean its working properly.

(b)Cam belt every 5 years or 75K, no worries there.

(c) high clutch pedal can mean the clutch is nearly worn out, by many are like that for 20,000 miles before they start slipping. Motorway usage as you plan wont give the clucth a hard time anyway.

(d) Advise oil and filter every 10k or a year. Plugs and air filter every 40K. Brake fluid should be changed every 2 years but on a car that old I would even bother.

Price you suggest seems OK to me, expect he will think its worth more, and trade book value would probably be quite a bit less.

600 miles a week with a 2.8 Quattro, Do you own an oil company??. Expect 25mpg. I make that £110 a week on fuel.

Thanks for that - may try and knock a bit more off for the clutch also. Do you know how much a replacement would be off the top of your head?

I am running an E36 328i also and that gives me over 35 mph on the motorway so I am hoping for a similar figure with the Audi (or at least over 30 mpg).

I am very fortunate in that I receive a fuel allowance so I break even at 30 mpg - much rather a car with quality build and reasonable performance than a 1.0 litre car that is hard work on the motorway!

May be looking at an E320 today also - different beast but could be worth a go.

Sorry for jumping in on this one. My 'S' reg Audi A4 saloon has the same problem with the central locking, apart from it still works. I can hear the pump working about 15 seconds after I lock or unlock the system and if I have to do the same very soon after using the driver's door lock, it will not operate, but the passenger door is always fine.
The driver's door lock has always been a bit stiffer to use than the passenger door.
Would it be best to check for a leak in the driver's door first? Also how do you take the door panel off, any tips?
I've had the car from 18 months old and the central locking pump has never been touched in my ownership.
I'm hoping Tame Technician will assist with this?

Have heard a fair few owners of these complaining of oil leaks and high oil consumption too. Worth a check as a duff bottom end would write the car off.

TO be honest, this vacuum operated Central locking is a bit before my time, so I'm not sure if your symptoms are due to a leak or the beginning of a failed drivers door lock. I have only ever replaced the "Pump/control unit" assembly which seems to fix a wide variety of different symptoms.

I dont think I ever had the door card off one that old, but there all pretty similar, find all the screws and gently pull outwards then upwards. Maybe invest in a haynes manual.

newer ones are like this http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/showthread.php?t=5380...
