My Dell Dimension has started making a whirring/whiney/groaning noise - sounds like the wind whistling through the gap in the front door!

Presume it's the fan. Is there a fix - squirt some WD40 through the vent in the back? (Only joking!). Or is it going to be a throw-away sometime soon? It's about 4 years old and is left on pretty much all the time.

You can get a new fan or a suitable heatsink instead. I improved my squeaky fan a bit with a shot of WD40 - but unclip it first!

what sort of age is the PC? Dell stuff usually comes with a decent warranty.

The thing I would point out is that the Dell use blumin quiet fans, so much so yourself putting a new one might make a different beast all together.

It's not however terminal, your PC can easily be fixed (if it's yours)

When I first got my PC built I put a Global Win fan on, it was chucking out around 60cfm and kept it cool, but I had to have box in another room, I just couldn't concentrate.

Now I have a Zalman, a better case and fan adjusters and it's much more sociable.

OK - I called Dell and got a person in their Bangalore call center - waiting time 25 secs. Gave them the device service tag number and they called up the spec and the date of purchase, machine is 4 years old. Call center assistant (Vidya) said to disconnect everything remove power lead and take the side off. Then she took me through a step by step isolation of all the components that can make a noise each time rebooting and then removing the power lead. It wasn't the main fan, or the hard-drive. It was the mini-fan on the videocard. Sorted with a spare card I had.

The call lasted 40 minutes and the guidance was absolutely super. Well done Dell!

I just pulled the side off mine while it was running and briefly unplugged each fan lead until the noise stopped. Pragmatic, me!

hit them with the handle of a screwdriver - it knocks teh dust out of the back. Then again, mine did't had a side on for nearly a year until I bought a bigger, better case

Dell have come on leaps and bounds in the last few years, they are now the best mass computer manufacturer easily available. The service is second to none and the quality of the kit astounds many people! I've never hesitate recommending Dell now

Global Win Stefan Hah!! I ran the 9600 rpm Delta on the processor and one assisting the graphics card!! Plus 5 80mm Ys Tech fans. That is loud!! Now use and Aska Silver Mountain 2 with Sanyo Denki on it. But I've been out of overclocking for a year or so now, after I blew up my Athlon TBird.

Any how, if it is making noises, take the Heat sink off, and then the fan and get rid of all the dust on both, then a shot of WD 40 into the fan should help.

The best way to get decent suport from dell is to call one of the business support numbers.
