Ive got ntl broadband and am hoping to connect it to a computer upstairs. I heard that it was very expensive and am hoping to find out how pricey it would be and how I could do it. if anyone has any answers to this please reply.

well at last a computer question I can help with.
The most exepnsive thing will be the ethernet cable from down to up. The way I did it was a bit simple and cost more than normal but saved a lot of grief. I went to PC world and bought a home networking package which basically consisted of a hub and 2 network (ethernet) cards and some software that i've never used. The one pc closest to the cable modem has 2 ethernet cards in it in seperate ports (we'll call that pc 1). The other pc has one card (pc2). Cable from pc2 goes into the hub, then cable from hub into pc 1. Then the last free port in pc1 send the cable to the modem. Then run xp ics wizard on both pc's and voila.
Sorted.

The easiest way to do it is to use a DSL router (I have one which I stopped using from today for sale, e-mail me through my profile if you want one).

If you have 2 network cards in one PC then that PC has to be turned on anytime you want to use the other internet on the other PC. By using a DSL router it simply divides the inernet connection from the cable modem and dishes it out to all of the PCs. I also loath ICS and using a DSL router is a very quick and efficient way round that.

Funky... using a long "crossover" ethernet cable you can skip the hub entirely.

Mind you, I've a large box of cat5 cable and all the gubbins for sticking plugs on the end, so that's easy for me to say I guess.

And knowing what PC World charge for ordinary ethernet cables, I shudder to think what they might try and charge for a crossover cable. Sigh.

Better yet - broadband wi-fi router and you don't have to run the cable (but for goodness sake-encrypt your wi-fi)...
