I have been a Sat-Nav sceptic for a long time, but I am driving in Europe in the summer, so took the plunge and bought a Tom Tom One western Europe.

A bit of testing in the UK on roads I know well and it has yet to pick a sensible route. Sometimes it chooses roads that are impassable, sometimes it will take you 7 miles out of your way onto a motorway for one junction when it would be much better to use the backroads. Last night it wanted to take me on a toll-ferry when there was a perfectly good route on land!

I really want Sat Navs to work for me, but they are so much hassle when you have to baby them all the time. If only you could select routes in the way you can on Google maps... the TomTom "chose alternative" option always seems to pull up a route even more ludicrous than the first.

Not sure about tom tom but my garmin has to be set up (ie)paved roads only etc otherwise it will take you down dirt track roads and you have to make sure its set for cars and not for someone walking or cycling hope this helps.
