Wireless-WEP-Keys

I've just installed a wireless router to my NTL modem and don't know what the 4 keys are for in the WEP security bit.

I can understand that you need to set one key, in a choice of either(?) Hex or ASCII, but why up to four keys?

Is this so that, if you want to set up to four keys, you can easily switch to another key quickly now and then to improve security?

It's just so that you can switch easily between one of four keys.
