I'm planning on taking my tripod with me when I go to Prague for New Year, but am a bit worried about how I'm going to get it there!

Does anyone have any experience of this - will airlines normally allow them in as handluggage, or will it need to go in the hold?

I've always stuck mine in the back of my suitcase and have never had a problem with damage. You'll be fine if your check-in baggage is big enough. 2nd option would be to pack your tripod in its bag with clothes stuffed around it.

I wouldn't think the security people would be too keen to see someone carrying a 2 foot long knobbly club around an airport or onto an aircraft nowadays !

I just got back from the Seychelles, dumped my usual big benbo for a £20 Jessups lightweight job... tucked away amongst the shirts and did the job - just. Guess it depends how heavy your camera is.
