Shieldaig to Applecross coastal route - about 30 miles of switchback driving and amazing views.

yes With some very good sight-lines, so fairly quick.

I have great memories of the Thurso to Durness route that traverses much of the north coast of Scotchland and is mostly single-tracked. IMO, maintaining momentum along well-sighted single-tracks is some of the best driving you can get and not too licence-threatening as a bonus.

yes Well worth doing instead of the pass. yes But you'll want to do the pass as well when visiting. And in both directions. yes

We stayed at the Applecross Inn last summer for a long weekend. Twas brilliant. Did the pass three times and the coastal route once. AND I made it to Inverness in the time mine hostess said locals could do it in. biggrinhehe In a Kia!

Or should I say: In a rental Kia. winkbiggrin

Amazing how fast hire cars can go!

Also, the 8ish mile stretch from Gairloch to Redpoint B8056 - and again, Torridon to Diabeg.

That was the single most terrifying road I have ever, EVER driven.

No armco, single track, 300ft drop to the loch. Postie drifting his van in the corners. No sight lines and suicidal bikers...

When I got to Diabaig I had to rest for a bit prior to driving back...

That is it - maintaining momentum - anticipation of vehicles coming in opposite direction, blind crests, hairpins.....

it is always a joy if you meet a few people coming in opposite direction who know how to use pasing places, when to press on to the next and when to give way and let the other guy come ahead...so you all keep moving.
