So, after selling my old 106 XSi, I decided as I already had a little punto as a daily drive, I wanted something else I could tinker about with and fix up. After considering mk2 golf gti's, mx-5's and a few other cars, a Mercedes 190e 2.6 caught my eye. Advertised for £600.

I went to view it yesterday, and while it needs quite a lot of work to look decent and a few mechanical bits I bought it for the princely sum of £460. It performed the drive home perfectly, the 2.6 straight six 12v is a great big lazy engine, but does go quite well if given the beans, and its ever so smmooth. The manual gearbox is ok, not the best gearbox I've ever used, but I realise merc aren't exactly known for the quality of these.

Anyway enough talking, here's a few pics. It needs a bloody good clean as its flithy, but I'll wait till the weather is a bit nicer.

A proper clean
Water pump needs replacing fairly soon.
Needs new rear springs
New bootlid to go on
Interior clean

Overall I'm happy, its a pretty cool looking car, and I can't wait to get working on it.

Update:

The bodywork really is pretty crap, faded and flat. The pictures manage to make it look a fair bit better than it is. Needs a good hoovering inside as well.

















I'm now halfway through replacing the water pump which I thought the bearings were ruined on, turned out it was actually the tensioner roll whcih was next to the water pump frown







Not too bad of a job itself, but a lot of things need removing to get access.

Good choice bargain price to for the year, nice to have leather as well those 190's are a good solid car much better than the latter merc's thumbup

A six cylinder is what I eventually what I want.

Great if you can work on the car yourself. They are very solidly built but need some tlc every now and again. Most of them are twenty years old and older!

About the rear springs, you might want to take a read of the guide on http://mercedes190.co.uk/ (it's under Technical → Chassis & Handling → Suspension & Chassis)

17th september

Bit of an update since last time.

I finally got the idler pulley tensioner thing in the post from eurocarparts, as it had to be ordered specially. Put it all back together with a new belt and the engine is a lot quieter now. Its still a bit whiney, but nowehere near as much as it was before.

The next issue that had arisen was a nasty droning/vibration through the whole car at specific speed. Around 55-70. It was really quite intrusive.

As it was purely road speed related, was there on acceleration, slightly worse on overrun and braking, but dissapeared if the clutch was pressed, It was fairly obviously a drivetrain issue.

After doing a bit of searching and posting on a 190 forum I was told there is a few main causes for this.

Flex joints on the propshaft failing
Propshaft centre bearing failing
Gearbox or Engine mounts perishing
Or differential about to blow up

So the other day I jacked the car up to have a gander.

Front Flex Disc. Looks in good condition. Somebody has changed this fairly recently I think


Centre Bearing. This had me worried at first. While it turned smoothly there was a lot of movement in the rubber here.



Rear Flex disc, similar condition to the front.



Now this had me worried at this point. The discs looked good, so this pointed to either gearbox, diff, or mounts.

Then after doing a bit more prodding I found one of the bolts on the front flex disc was very loose! So loose I could spin it about with one finger! I took a video of it here for anyone interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KPiVf9SbaQ

To get to the bolt I had to remove the rear gearbox mount thing, and then I could get a spanner behind to hold the nut while I tightened the bolt.

So, then I put it all back together again, in the hope this loose bolt may have partly caused things. I got down the road into an NSL, and accelerated. No Noise, No vibration. Just a smooth ride.

I coudn't beleive it, one bolt, was causing an incredible vibration.

So thats one more issue sorted.

There is a touch of vibration, and squeeling on the brake pedal now, and looking at the discs they are fairly worn all round. So my to do list looks like this now

Discs and pads all round. OEM discs, Greenstuff pads.
Oil Change
Springs. The rear springs are very tired, and it means the back is sitting too low, causing excessive wear on the inner tread of the tyres. New springs all round I think. Possibly some -40mm ones.

So, started fitting the new springs today. I decided to invest in some as the rear was sitting very low, I suspected that they had just sagged and grown tired over their pretty long lifetime.

The rear is a pretty easy job really and as the shock is not integrated with the spring it is even easier. All that is needed is the shock lower bolt, the arb bolt, and the hub lower bolt are undone. You are then able to pull the lower arm down, and just pull the spring out.

And there you have it. The reason it was sitting so low was that about 2 whole coils had snapped off. I was almost able to pull the whole spring out with the wheel off the ground

That was it for today though, only manages to get one of the rears done. Going to do the other rear, and the two front ones tomorrow. The fronts are a touch more complex though.

Doing the front suspension was a bit of a bh to be honest. Lots of faffing trying to get the spring compressors in the right place, undoing arbs and dampers as well.

Finally got it sorted and pretty happy with it. Ideally I would like the rear to sit a little higher, as the wheels are just sitting in the arches. Much happier with how the front looks now though.

Another small update. Since the last time, I've managed to sort out an active subwoofer for the boot. Gives the upgraded soundsystem a nice kick. However as the fuel tank is between the boot and the rear seats, it means its somewhat muted. Can't complain for £50 though. And one of the previous owners had kindly left a battery live feed in the car, already plumbed through the dash. Happy days.

So the next problem was that, a few days after I had the car, the heater blower motor had stopped working. I had briefly looked at replacement parts, but these were priced at the thick end of £80 frown .

I then searched through a few old threads on the 190 forum I visit. It was there that it was suggested the motors can often rust slightly and seize. So, if removed oiled and cleaned up they work a treat again. So i set about doing just this today.

Firstly had to remove the single wiper and its mechanism, then unbolt the firewall and move it forward, allowing more access to the heater motor area.

Simply remove the cover, remove the bolts holding it in place, and the wires, and yank it out.

Gave it the quick once over and it was pretty obvious it had rust on the spindle part. Gave it an oil and hooked it up to the battery. lo and behold it worked a treat.

So, put it back in place and put everything back together smile

Total cost: an afternoons leisurely work.

Number of fixes that have cost me nothing: 2 biggrin


Jobs still to do:

Still need to do an oil change
New discs and pads all round. Front discs are warped. frown
New wheels.

So, just got back from the cinema tonight. After the film had finished i went back to my car. And as the car park was pretty empty i decided to be a bit hooliganish and had a bit of a spin.

Don't think its damaged anything, its been blowing for a while but I figured it was most likely the actual system corroding, not coming apart. Looks like its just come completely loose to me at the moment, so thats tomorrows job sorted.

So, I still haven't got the exhaust fixed, as I'm waiting on a few things. Basically not sure whether to replace the lot with a stainless system, replace the back box with a stainless system, or just weld the old one back together.

Anywho, I've had a nasty worn wheel bearing noise for a while on the car, and while it was in the garage I decided to have a go at replacing the front ones. When the car was on the ground you could shake the wheel and there was obvious movement.

Went down to gsf and for £26 they gave me two kits. Was quite impressed with the kits, absolutely everything you need, even replacement brake caliper bolts.



So, to the job, pretty easy overall. Whip the disc and the caliper off. As well as the ABS sensor. here's one I made earlier



undo the allen bolt that is on the nut, and withdraw the nut, which leaves you free to pull the hub out.



Next is the annoying bit, take out the front bearing, and then you can punch out the rear bearing, oil seal, and the bearing runner. Turn the hub over, and punch the outer bearing runner off.



Then you have to drift the new runners on, put the rear bearing in and the oil seal on top. Then fill the hub 2/3 full of grease. Apply the front bearing, and reattatch the hub. Do the nut up so the disc is difficult to turn, then back it off 1/3 of a turn and re tighten the allen bolt.



Bolt the disc and the caliper back up, and put the wheel back on! job jobbed.

Pretty simple job by all accounts. The rears are a different kettle of fish though. Mine are ok at the minute.

Next job. When I lowered the car I was a bit unhappy with how low the back sat. As a side effect of this my tyres are wearing badly on their inner edges, as the camber of the wheel is very negative.

When mercedes built these cars they came with a points system depending on how many options they carried. The more options, the heavier they weighed, and so the more points they carried. These points are calculated in a table, and different rubber spring cup sizes are applied to the top of the spring to make the ride height the same across the range.

Well mine is on the smallest spring cup size you can get, so i've ordered the next size up for the rear, in an attempt to raise it up a bit.

Back on the road. Whoop whoop!

Finally had my new exhaust section delivered, which I fitted today. Its got a little leak on one of the flange's as its a bit of an odd shape, but its pretty much good to go.

Not driven it since I changed the new front wheel bearings and it feels so much better. No vibration on braking, and no bearing noise. Feels great. Just realised how much I missed driving it, especially in this weather!

So, to properly get it sorted though I need som exhaust sealing paste?

Anybody know of any decent products? I've only used holts gun gum in the past, and it was pretty useless.

Decided that as i'm starting a new job monday and I'm not going to be using it to make the commute, i'm better off selling really rather than just using it for the weekends. I'd also like to save up for a proper performance rwd coupe.

I had fun owning it, and working on it, was a very comfortable drive, and great to slide about in. But its just not really that fun day to day driving. The steering has not feel whatsoever which I really don't like. And its hard to really grab it by the scruff of the neck and feel you are getting the best from it. Especially after having come from a non power steering 106 XSi.

If anyone is interested in having a look at the auction my email is in trust. Not that many of you are after seeing what I've done to it. biggrin

30th november

Last day of the auction to sell my car was today. Thought I'd drive it to work one last time. Had flushed the coolant and filled it up the other day. Never used a drop of water in its life, and then the coolant light comes on on the way to work frownmad

Almost the whole expansion tank was empty, so refilled it on the lunch break. Checked the oil cap, tiny bit off mayo. Drove home just now, checked the expansion tanks and was almost half gone!

Could be a leaking rad or pipe somewhere, but the bit of mayo, has me looking at hgf. Tried to pull the plugs this evening to have a proper look but not got the right socket with me!

ARGH, so peed off right now. Probably looking at a load more work now before I can get rid. frownmad

Its never overheated at all so hopefully the head hasnt warped or anything?

9th january

Thought I'd do an update on this, as I haven't done one in a while and I'm actually making progress of sorts now.

So, after the attempted sale and headgasket fiasco, I thought then and there I would begin breaking the car. Some of the parts, especially the leather are worth a buck or two, so I would easily make a bit of my money back. I got as far as selling the spoiler, when I had a massive change of heart.

I'd always wanted to do some sort of engine work, as I've not yet done any, and I just really want to drive it again. I miss it greatly. I guess driving a punto for a few weeks will do that to you!

So, I began to try and sort the headgasket, which started by basically removing the whole of the front end, the inlet manifold, exhaust manifold and the head itself.

At the moment, I'm stuck with three bolts holding the camshaft sprocket on, these are the torx kind, and I swear they are a size inbetween what is available. I only know of t27 and t30. t27 is too small, t30 just too big.

However, once these are done, i will have the timing chain off and the head will then be sent for cleaning. Can't wait to finally get it done, and i'm missing driving about in the snow! which frankly would have been damn scary, but awesome fun at the same time. Guess i'll just have to make to with the punto for that, though lift off oversteer, just isnt the same as power over frown

Yippee! I braved the cold and finally got the head off today. The heagasket looks reasonable overall but there is a water and oilway close right at the back which I think was the offending one. Just going to get the head cleaned back up now, and get some head set bits ordered, and its all going back together.

7th february

Bit of an update to this today. Had a pretty busy weekend covered some miles collecting some new bits.

So, when I removed the head, I snapped a few ht leads, trashed the rotor drive, and the backing plate thingy as well. (Which is a £60 part!) I got onto the 190e forum and asked about for any spares people had. So I get a reply that somebody has a 2.6 on 100k with a recent headgasket job done. He wants £30 and it cleared off his drive. This way I can get my bits I need and a new engine.

My engine has done 160k+ so this is a fairly good chance, to avoid spending over £100 in gaskets and other bits, and for it not to work properly. So i jumped at the chance for the new (to me) engine.

I drove down to bognor regis today, from swindon in my little punto to collect it. When I got there the bloke was struggling to get the autobox off it. In the end we just loaded it in with a crane, and left the boot half closed with half the box sticking out! The back of the car weighed down a fair bit.

Unfortunatley I don't have access to an engine crane at the moment, so the engine is still in the punto!

I did manage to get the autobox off at least, so with a few pairs oof extra hands I should be able to slide the engine out .





I also managed to get my hands on some genuine EVO 1 alloys as well. Clean as a whistle for only £60. These usually go for £250+ for a decent set. These ones are very clean next to zero curbing and no laquer peel, picked these up from luton on saturday. They do need a new set of tyres though, these ones are a huge profile. I did trial fit to see what they were like though. Theyre a hell of a lot wider than the old ones. 225 tyres as opposed to 195.







Thats all for the moment really. The old engine and gearbox is almost out. But I'll be properly getting on with it all next weekend.

9th february

Another update today. I took a half day from work today to get the engine out of the car. Finally got it out, there werer plenty of fiddly cables and pipeworks that were the most time consuming in the end.

Pretty happy so far, the first big engine pull i've ever really done. Just got to transfer the clutch assy and flywheel etc, and some other ancillaries to the new engine before getting it back in the car.

Small update. New engine is in now, just waiting for new inlet and exhaust gaskets before I can get everything sorted. Most of the stuff is connected back up now though.

your a bit like myself...throwing money away that will never be retrieved on old cars...ive got 5 cars myself atm...using a mint c43 merc atm and have a 270 bhp diesel fabia garaged which has cost me 20k utn. also got a 93 absolutely mint senator cd 24v that ive done 1 mile in 3yrs ownership...recently bought a 93 merc e320 thats done 87k and is in superb cond, i paid 600 as well for it and spent bout 400 utn getting niggles sorted,its same colour scheme as yours and has the same alloys youve just put on,stands me about 1k now but is a superb original nick car,mite use it as a runner once sure gona be no more snow as its useless in it,will keep watching thread for updates and good luck.

If you want to see a 190E 2.6 with a new engine get this months copy of Mercedes Enthusiast magazine from your local Smiths.

The Mercedes guys have fitted a latest edition Blue Efficiency diesel into a 190. 57mpg and about 6.5secs. Shame its a manual and not an auto.

A neighbour of my parents had one of these. He drove it up to London at the crack of dawn every day, 5 days a week. He owned an office cleaning business.

Nothing ever went wrong with it, apart from service items. And it was built like the proverbial.

Wonderful cars.
