I have recently acquired a Mk5 Golf TDi 140 and even at a steady cruise it is very noisy inside the car.

A lot of the noise seems to be generated by the tyres which are Michelin Primacy HPs on the front and Continental SportContact2s on the rear.

What are the recommendations for quiet 205/55VR16s? I'm not interested in longevity, I just want a less unpleasant drive!

Thanks.

The primacy HPs are generally considered a "soft" and quiet tyre. Are yours particularly worn?

Thanks for your reply, PP.

I would say that the Primacy HPs on the car are about half worn.

Goodyear Excellence are without a doubt the quietest tyre I've used around that size. They have them on the Octavias here at work, replacing the OE Bridgestone ER30 and there's a hell of a difference.

The newer Bridgestone Turanza ER300 is quite good too, marginally noisier than the Excellence, but better handling due to a harder sidewall, but consequently slightly less comfortable.

I would be pretty confident the problem is exclusively the Conti's on the rear - I had an identical spec MkV Golf supplied with these from new and when part worn they sounded like a failed wheel bearing.

Would recommend you go with Michelins all round have have the alignment checked to ensure you're not generating any strange wear patterns - that's what I did, and thereafter only my tractor engine stood between me and passing birdsong... wink

Good car by the way - I had it for four years, my bro has it now, good old hector.

The wife runs Coopers on hers. nice grip, good wear and no noticable tire noise. Plus of course, they are cheaper than the well known brands
