After deciding the TomTom iPhone was a waste of money (no cradle, no phone and navigation, etc....), I've decided to go for a stand-alone unit.

The only thing is my last satnav was the TomTom Navigator 4 for the iPaq so I'm a bit behind on things.

I've come across these two as they seem pretty good and lie within my €250 budget. Can anyone recommend a specific one?

Essential features must be maps for Bulgaria and adjoining Eastern countries, and bluetooth connectivity with my iPhone for hands-free phone conversations.

Suggestions or alternatives?

Both good, the tomtom 930 is great, no LIVE but thats probably not an issue, perhaps in that case look for a 730 as it offers the same but without the US maps and remote control.

Tomtom has IQ routes (more 'intelligent' routing and also Map corrections.....both good things to have

The Navigon 4350, whilst being a bit of an unknown really is a good unit, and particularly for the price, not quite as polished an interface, but the Myroutes system (gives you 3 routes, lets you choose) is a good idea.

Other contenders would be the Garmin 1390T....or it's outdated but similarly specced cousin the 265wt
Both have all the features you need; BT, Traffic, Europe however the software updates on the 1390t really do make it a much nicer unit to use (and lane guidance aswell), both the same for navigation though......these garmins have the best POI database around if that concerns you

Perhaps look at the Mio/Navman S500 BT series aswell, they are quite good but dont offer anything above the others (2 years free updates though I believe)

All Valid choices, My preference would be the 1. Tomtom or 2. Garmin but you need to have a go and see what you like, x30's are thin on the ground now, but similar to a x40 range....and the garmins and navigons are avaliable to try in Halfords stores, and elsewhere i'm sure.

  • EDIT*
Worth checking iPhone compatability aswell, all will probably accept it, but only for calls and numerical dialling, phonebook compatibility is not yet supported by most software (this will change soon, hence the garmin/tomtom are likely to be the first to feature the upgrade)

Hi Matthew.

Cheers for the extensive info there. It's still a hard choice but I think I would take the TomTom 730 unit if the maps for Bulgaria are included. I just need them for Sofia and the main highways along with the main roads to get there through Hungary, Serbia and so-forth.

I also found an interesting article in AV Forums regarding the iPhone compatibility. It seems to work well and even accepts the phone book and SMS text to speech which is nice.

If however, the Bulgaria maps aren't available, I would have to resort to the Navigon unit. I've tried the Garmin ones but the UI is clunky and I find the unit a bit "sporadic" at times. My sister uses a lower end Müvi unit and I wasn't all that impressed.

The only condition is the Navigon must accept the iPhone connectivity which as I mentioned before works with the TomTom but I can't find any info on it.
