looking at getting an e class estate March 2009 model. it doesn't have COMAND and the dealer is talking £2k + to retro fit.

Anyone know where I can get a more sensible priced integrated unit?

I don't know ath COMAND is but why no simply buy a car that already has it fitted?

Why run the risk of having it fitting retrospectively with the inevitable niggles that will occur. Plus how long will be in warranty for and will it invalidate any other part of the warranty.

Just my 2p.

this is my problem.

two cars, both same price - £24,500, both black 220 cdi

car 1 - black arctico / leather AND 7 seats 6k miles 09 plate
car 2 - beige leather with COMAND 10k miles 57 plate

ideally want 7 seats, comand and leather.

7 seats only occasionally use, so do i get comand instead lost all sense of being able to think for myself since getting nav) and get an older car (mileage is irrelevant really).

neither dealer offering much in way of discount.

really don't like stick on windscreen nav systems.

logically what is the better car to buy?

COMAND is MB's offering of sat-nav then?

I think you need to work out what your mandatory requierments are and then what your nice-to-have's are. Then work from there.

I have a 1990 W124 E300TE - 7 seats. I'm getting rid soon but will definitely be replacing it with another 7 seater (probably a T5 Volvo). It really is very very useful.

Proper COMAND units are available on ebay and the like. You need to be extremely careful they aren't nicked (a lot come from the eastern parts of europe), or misdescribed, another frequent pitfall.

With a decent car you are probably best sticking to either Merc or a decent specialist.

Got Comand and it ain't all that just looks good. The sat nav is ok but TomTom knocks it for six. The disks are around £200 or so and more from adealer so if you buy with comand negotiate witht he dealer to get the latest disk thrown in.

On an 09 plate you should be able to get the new bluetooth COMAND unit fitted; although the older ones are being sold a lot cheaper at the moment. As someone above has posted www.comand.com will come to your house/work and fit it for you, I run a Merc dealership and we use them to retro-fit any that we have.

As people have said, it's not the greatest system in the world, but it is reasonably competent as a navigation unit and you don't have cables etc. everywhere like you would with a tomtom.

My typing sucks.

Do have the phone prep with a cradle and the phone system is excellant and sounds like the person is in the car with you. I am not sure if the phone kit requires comand but if it does a good reason to get comand.

You can retro fit the command with the separate units for about £1800 + VAT this i quiet a big job
or you can retro the new HDD NTG3 nav for around £1600.00 + VAT (this includes Bluetooth) it doesn't matter whether you have the latest spec car or not. The only difference is a bit of change to the wiring (all the wires are there just in the wrong place
this stops the radio tuning and a few other bits)

This is what I do so I have the diagrams to change the wiring and have done a few of these. Either way I can retro both options..

Let me know if your interested.
