DVD multiregion question

I just tried a R1 disc on my Toshiba SD520e multiregion player.
However the picture comes up with green stripes, with the picture not being straight and fuzzy etc. This doesn't happen with R2 discs.

Is my TV not suitable for NTSC signals? It's a Bang and Oulfsen Beovision which is probably over 10 years old
It also doesn't work on a smaller but cheap 14in portable.

Gutted as i got BadBoys2 for xmas! :'(

Just played around with a switch on the back of the player and it works fine!!!
