Hi all.

My younger brother is at uni and is looking for his first car, he's driven plenty, passed 2 years ago, but travelling was always more important, so he never managed to actually own a car.

He wants something cool (he actually wants my e36 e325 whilst i'm away travelling but insurance is a little steep and he'd have to give it back after 8 months so thats out), and he doesn't want any othe usual first car rubbish.

We did some autotrader-ing and looked into a few options, then some insurance quotes. merc 190's came up trumps. All i really know about mercedes were that the old ones were brilliantly made then there was a squiffy bit in the mid/late 90's, and as a student, he'd much rather be rolling around in a slightly scruffy merc than anything front wheel drive and hatchbackish.

So, just how slow are these none turbo diesel engines? I had an astra with a none turbo diesel engine and i didnt mind it, diesels without the narrow power band of the turbo seem to just be a bit sweeter. So, 5cyl (i figured it'd make a cool noise and would be a bit smoother/more drivable) or 4 cyl? What are the auto boxes like? Theres something apealing about a diesel auto. Are mercs fuel economy figures to be belived? Do the engines (or diesel pumps) take kindly to veggy oil? And is there anything else i aught to let him know?

Or, should he just go for the 1.8 petrol? Do the petrol motors take high mileages like the diesel ones do?

Thanks all

Nick

Hi,

I have copied your post to Mercedes190.co.uk, I will reply with what they say (I am not too sure on the diesels)

The 190 is a great car, good to see someone thinking outside of the box rather than going for some sort of crappy French hatchback.

I've posted it, but I've been told to point you over there. It will be well worth it, the guys (and ladys!) on there are very helpful

Hi all - if he can get hold of a 2.5D 5 cylinder then these are known as the million mile motors - always seen as taxis in 3rd world countries. I buy them on ebay from between 300 for a rough example upto a spot on one for about £800. I also buy the C-class with the same engine. The 220D is just as good but not as sought after - I export them to Morocco in my spare time with a mate.

The 2.0 did 0-60 in 19.1 seconds.

No personal experience, but I've read various times about the diesels being very slow, but being quite solid cars and relatively economical.

The 190E 2.0 Diesel will be epicly slow. But the 2.5 5-pot diesel will merely be leisurely...
