A Class gearbox fault

Hi all,
Can anyone shed any light on the following for me:
Just had a call from my dad who is off visiting relatives a 100 miles away. Apparently as he was driving his auto Merc 170 cdi down the motorway when it jumped out of 'D' and into 'F'. He says the throttle still worked revering the engine etc but there was no power.
He turned it off left it for 10 mins and then drove about 20mins to his destination, driving it in tiptronic on the motorway and using fully auto on the back roads. Apparently it is now fine, but I was wondering if anyone knows if this is a sign of an imminent fault or just a temporary glitch?
