Just had a service indicator saying my CLK220 CDi is due an 'A' service at the end of the month. It will be 6 months old then and done approx 5500 miles.

Couple of questions:
1. Is this a normal service? Seemed a bit early to me at first.
2. What does it entail?
3. How much does it expect to cost?

That's not right - recent cars should be on fixed 12mth/15,500 mile service intervals. Take it back to the supplying dealer if you can and ask them to correct it.

Chances are your car was built 6mths before you bought it and ASSYST wasn't zero'd before delivery to you. On some models it doesn't start running until the car has done a certain (like 150?) mileage.

ETA: A service is a (slightly) gloried oil change. "List" price is around £260 but many dealers will do it for £200.

Thanks very much.

Just spoken to the local dealer in Leeds who said exactly that, suggested I pop down in the next few days and they'll plug it in to a laptop to reset it.

Here's where the system falls down, as I had a similar problem, when they reset it they'll only be able to reset it back to 0 (e.g. 15,500 miles/12 months to the next service) or forward, so it'll show the next service as being 'B' rather than 'A' - so the end result is that you may need to work out for yourself when the next service is due, either by noting when a year from purchase has passed, or when 15,500 has passed on the odometer.

Does that make sense?! Good luck getting it sorted anyway.

They can set it to show anything they want, although many StarDiagnose operators don't seem to be very capable.

My car called for a B service as its first service but I asked the dealer to do an A and they cheerfully did. No wailing or gnashing of teeth over the warranty etc. It came out firmly showing a B as next service though, when, if left to its own devices, it should have flipped back to A.

When it's re-set (PROPERLY)... 2 things are done.

Initial registration date is entered. Date the customer actually purchased the car/when it was registered.
Calculation of months since initial registration date.

ASSYST will then automatically calculate the correct service A/B etc and how many days/miles until this service is due from the day the reset is done, to correspond with original service scheduling.

Unless the person doing this got one of these entries wrong it doesn't really fail. My bet is that particular person instead of altering the service schedule so to correct it properly just reset the service indicator... hence why it switched to the next service & default maximum mileage until next service. Depending on how old the car is... (if it's not hard its first service - so over a year old 12-15k depending on car) take it back & get them to do it properly.
