Not paranoid, but was heartbroken as a kid to see what a small petrol leak in the engine bay and a spark (possibly from the starter?) did to my Dad's pride and joy. Could only stand and watch as no means to tackle the flames.

I have therefore decided to carry a fire extinguisher in the Tiv. Problem is where to mount it? These things aren't terribly small and there isn't a great deal of spare space in an 'S'.

Anyone got any good solutions to this problem?

Saw greenv8s commented on a previous thread about 'by the drivers knees', but not sure how this would work?

Err, mine sits behind my seat.

Perhaps I should fix it to something

Needs to be somewhere you can get to quickly, so passenger footwell is useless... rear parcel shelf perhaps?

Mine is attached to the bottom of the back wall of the parcel shelf.
Easy to mount (self tappers through the grp - well above the fuel tank) and easy to get to in an emergency.
Probably easy to nick as well - it's a flash silver-finished Firemaster.

I considered the parcel shelf, but it will be exposed to direct sunlight with the top down and possibly in view of sticky-fingered scrotes!

Could devise some sort of cover to hide it I suppose?

I meant, mounted to the floor sideways in front of the driver's seat, under your knees.

Aha, cunning! I see what you mean now (d'oh ).

Will investigate possibility of doing this. Did you screw fix it to the floor? Need to seal any holes against leaks.

Hi, I mounted mine in my 3000M on the transmission tunnel just at the passengers’ knee. The S would be even easier to mount there as the tunnel isn't as high. Now saying that, I have not had my S long enough to start looking at that spot but it worked great there on the 3000. It was upright and just a flick of a level to release it. Did it get in the passenger’s way? Who cares,,,,, if they are sitting there, they are freeloaders.

What about these halon systems, where there is a fixed system installed in the engine bay? Wonder if they have a large main cylinder installed somewhere.

I don't think you are allowed now to use Halon gas (maybe wrong though), at a Trial sometime ago I used my Halon extinguisher on someone elses car and when I tried to have it refilled I couldn't get it done, apparently to breath it is injurious to health.
My powder extinguisher was for sometime "fixed" to the rear parcel shelf using industrial velcro and it worked OK, I have now refitted it to the back "wall" of the parcel shelf with bolts into the boot, its pretty tight in the spring clip/bracket and if someone is going to try to nick it good luck to them.

If you can get it out to use it, surely they can get it out to nick it?

Umhhh !! - thought someone would ask that.
At first glance it looks as though the fixing clip is a solid fit around the neck of the extinguisher therefore they may not attempt it (one hopes). Secondly I know how to get it out quickly whereas others wouldn't.
Finally, they only cost around a tenner and I'm prepared to lose that against losing the car.
(perhaps I should log on as "the optimist" ?)
