Any one out there seen/shed any light on these new cameras that have appeared on the M69, M40 and M42. They are white, three pairs per carriage way (bridge mounted). The 'pair' appear to be made up of a cctv camera and a detector similar to the Traffic master sensor you see on those blue poles.
I don't think they are speed related as I haven't had a ticket yet!

I think you will find these are the new number plate recognition system that is sweeping the motorways.There are also some on the M5 & M27. They read the numbers of passing vehicles and can track them from the central computer,all over the motorway network. Origanally the result of an experiment linked to motorway tolling, but hijacked by big brother Tone and his army of half wits. They are probably linked to the new camera fitted to the hubble space telescope. Come on you didn't belive it was for star gazing did you?

Perhaps they will if a Terrorist gets caught on the way to plant a bomb, then we'll see how much of an invasion of his privacy and freedom of movement it was.... Mind you, none of them said a dicky bird about the US special forces chap that was shot in the head when captured.. Wonder why not

To add to the new camera list. On the A68, just South of Dalkeith, coming up to the Dunhill Wind Farm. There have been roadworks there and now they have cleared we have two brand spanking new overtaking lanes - one going South, the other North. Perfect to pass the dawdlers and lorries which frequent the road. But at the end of each one, just as you lose the lane, a brand new Gatso (not yellow - see my previous post on this thorny subject here in Scotland). Brilliant planning. OK if you are on your own and can plan accordingly. Unfortunately they are right at the point where those who want to play chicken hit about 80mph. I'd rather have them fly past me than have them stand on the anchors and push into the queue as they see the camera, probably to late. What's the betting there are whole load of rear end shunts as they hit the brakes and try to "merge in turn" with four wheels locked.
Interestingly, as I headed North into Dalkeith, I passed the school, right on the main road. No major warnings, no traffic calming, no Gatsos. Whatever happened to the directive on the siting of cameras. Nothings changed at all.

I think the earlier post was right. The cameras are the new automatic number plate recognition system thingys. They've apparently been in use at Ferry ports for some time now, speaking of which, that system also recognises faces!!
Just think, in a few years time your better half will be able to log onto the net and see where you've been, where you are and where you're going. Now that is scary

Simple extension to the following;.
Camera reads number plates, calculates speed from anywhere else in the country.
Swansea identifies car, (perhaps facial recognition captures driver's face), miscreant identified, ticket in the post before driver actually gets home, fine taken by direct debit by the end of the day.
Now there's a thought.

By many accounts, these face regonition systems are a load of old cobblers, giving very rocky results in real use, but that hasn't stopped manufacturers cashing in on 11/09/2001.
It was also reckoned that the M6/M42/M5 cameras were number plate cameras, but for the purposes of checking car tax evasion. They haven't a hope in hell of doing face recognition, IMHO.

I think we've discussed this on here before.. they're developing a stereoscopic vision thingimi which looks more promising, once they get the software right.
Even when they do, the technology is going to remain way too expensive to deploy widescale for many years to come. It will make it though, one day...

unless you are genuinely somebody the police want to look for then computerised face recognition is not something you should currently worry about.
We recently (6 mnths ago) had somebody from a well known american company trying to sell us some text searching stuff at work, and one of the big american companies offshoots was computerised identification. the upshot of it was, it is very good, with human assistance at identifying people from a database of about 10,000 - but no more. thats it. if your not in that list of 10,000 then they have no idea. if your in that list then your face will popup on the plod's monitor as a suspected name. of course you could look very like one of the ten thousand - but that would be unlucky. and that 10 thousand had to be broken down by racial characteristics, black, white, grey, red etc.
of course they are probably working on it right now to make it better. but it was limited by the algorithum they were using rather than computer power.
not that this is reassuring. but it is approximately state of the art, as far as i know.
