Is the sound just right? Ie enough ooomph to make it sound "right" or will the sound be too noticeable to other or intrusive?

IMO it sounds fantastic, it sounds much the same when cruising so no annoying drone....which I am really pleased about because that was my main concern as I do quite a few miles.

It only really opens its lungs when the throttle is provoked!!! And when it does the sound is spine tingling!!!

Sounds old school TVR griffith below 4000rpm which is a sound I have always loved

Can the same be done on a 2002 CLK 500? Was planning to change back box but this sounds like a worthwhile mod??

From my research into the W208 (I know yours is a W209), the most restrictive part is the backbox. If you change the mid-section, you will hardly notice the difference. Having a straight pipe and no backbox gave it that TVR sound, however, BUT does it suit a CLK? I opted for a customised backbox to match the mid-section which I felt was just right - not too loud and certainly not quiet. (I still have it if anyone wants to buy it off me.)

Its just the mid section that I have had removed and it is much louder than before - dont know about a CLK though, you can always do a bit of experimenting until you get the sound right, as any bit thats cut out could be put back in if you werent happy I'm sure. As long as you explain to the garage that you may want to do this so they cut it in the right place in case it needs refitted.

I had mine replaced with a normal pipe. Very little difference. Basically, the owner would need to check which box is biggest as that will be the most restrictive. The rear box was much bigger than it "needed" to be - the perforated pipe curls round inside the baffles thus removing a lot of the sound... which is a pity as it's a V8.

OK thanks for the advice, I'll stick to swapping the back box - yes I want a burble but nothing the impacts the cabin too much

Can you tell me more about your customised back box, may be interested for my W208 CLK55.
Cheers
