Looking into joining the Audi world. circa 40K to spend. would you go for 2nd hand 2007 RS4 Avant (which i prefer the look outside) or 2009 S4 avant (which i like the new interior).

My choice would be plain and straight forward; RS4 yes

I love my S4 (V8 shape), but know I will always end up in an RS.

The current S4 actually has LESS power than my car - it's a V6 with 328bhp, whereas the RS4 is a V8 and 404bhp (or is it 414, I can't remember).

anyhow, that's all you need to know I think hehe

Had the same dilemma and went for the S4. Lots of worry about DRC and Coking issues on the RS4, and the S4 is more eco friendly on tax and of course longer warranty (although you can extend the RS4). Although the S4 has less power, performace figures are not that far different and what with an improved generation of chassis should be more interesting.

RS4 is a far superior car, no question.

But its a bit like a one off hand made super-car. The ride will be a bit too firm for most, It will cost loads to run, Front brakes will be over £1000, 4 tyres will be over £1000, it will use lots off oil. If you fire it up, run it for a few minutes and then turn it off, it will get flooded. And of course the DRC will need sorting out every year or so.

The S4 on the other hand will be fast, but not in the same league as the RS4, sports diff livens up the turn in a treat, but it just wont hold the road like an RS4.
It should be more like a normal A4 to live with. Its to soon to say how the longevity of them will be, I have fears for the new S tronic box, but so far I've only done one in a Q5, S4's have all been as good as gold.

It would be the new S4 for me (and the family), so I can get an autobox (not available on the RS4) along with a slightly larger interior. Boring I know.

For me it is a matter of the 90 percent of the car you want to focus on everyday or that special extra 10 percent.

The rs4 engine is superb and sounds amazing, whilst those butch wheel arches clearly let any other aspiring racer know that you mean business! However it is a pretty extreme car none the less with some of the drawbacks you expect ( running costs, hurting the polar bears, and a firmer ride.

For everyday use whilst still feeling like you are in a special motor capable of coming out to play the s4 does everything better. Now should you be chasing down a 911 on a twisty a road, or for bragging rights at the pub, you may wish for an rs4 , but for just about any other time the s4 is the more subtly satisfying option.

RS4...

But, many tuners are now delivering c440bhp from the new supercharged S4, so will actually be (slightly) quicker than the RS4.

Much more of a Qcar. However that said, the RS4 will still retain better value than the newer S4, look better, perform better overall.

I've had an S4 before, and even going back 3yrs to get an RS4 I don't regret it for a moment. They're much more 'special' than S cars...
