I've mentioned it a few times on here, although I did nick the tip from som1 else!

It brings them up great with a bit of elbow grease, plus it really waterproofs them.

to get an extra shine from the roof after using this trick wipe over the top with a very small coating of klear floor cleaner, but beware, use too much and the black will look blue in the rain

Or just use the correct Renovo stuff that actually cleans, UV protects and waterproofs the hood rather than just making the dirt black

Yep, works like a charm. Got a mohair hood now though, so it's the vastly more expensive Renovo option for me these days!

I've used Renovo for 3 years and I reckon shoe polish gives far superior waterproofing, IMHO of course!

What is the best way to apply the polish? Rag or soft brush? Do you have to buff it up after?

Reveno and the autoglym are good, they're expensive, plus you don't have them lying around like polish.

I just do the hood the same as shoes, one brush on, one brush off, working on a quarter of the hood at a time, doing it in small circles with lots off rubbing (ohh errr misses)

Make sure you try a small area first tho just in case!!

Personally I'd rather use a cleaner that lifts dirt & pollutants out of the vinyl before putting anything on to seal it whether that's Renovo Protector or boot polish. Probably more important the other end of winter but there are plenty of nasty pollutants around this time of year too.

good point lazza, I always give it a good clean with a sponge and car shampoo before hand and really get the dirt and crap out

For those who have put shoe polish on their roofs, whats the best method for applying it, the normal brush you would use for your shoes or is this too abrasive??

Hi all, I used Kiwi boot polish for my vinyl black roof, came up an absolute treat!! on my MX5 M2. Thanks for the tip. Good as new now cheers Taz :-)

You'll laugh at this - when I was skint I used shoe polish to shine up the tyres on my old Bedford CA. Always looked great. 20 years later I recreated the past by trying it on the MX the other weekend. Looked at least as good as the Autoglym product I was using but took rather more elbow grease!
