VW TDI 1.9 130 tandem pump
Discussion
My old Passat has been liberally pissing diesel / coolant over my garage for a while now.
Local indy have diagnosed it as a faulty tandem pump. £280 + VAT.
A quick dig about seems that they are a fairly common failing on these engines.
Just wondering if any PHers have had theirs fixed in any other way than a direct replecement and if so what the costs were?
FFS. I'm not convinced the Germans make them any better than anyone else.

Tandem pump has nothing to do with coolant, its a fuel pump and a vacuum pump in tandem. SO it may fix the fuel leak, but cant see if having anything to do with coolant loss.
That said when I change tandem pumps its always been for loss of fuel pressure resulting in running problems at high rpm I've never seen one leak yet.
Have you had a look with a tourch round the back of the head, Could be one of the fuel hoses that feeds/returns from the pump leaking.
Coolant loss in the same area is usually the plastic housing where the coolant temp sensor and a number of pipes connect right at th back of the cylinder head.

Cheers tt.
On a seperate issue it went in because it was leaking coolant. Looks like the leak has been coolant mixed with diesel.
It has had an age old problem with not starting when the car's nose has been facing up, so putting 2 & 2 together that would be the fuelling problems I've been having.
Looks like a big bill for next week!
