I am part of a syndicate with some work collegues to buy a car specifically for trackdays. Obviously we have to get it to and from events, so we need road insurance to cover road risks. I have been attempting to get quotes on a third party, limited mileage basis from (at the moment) a small number of insurers. When I explain that the vehicle will be used on track days, and that I am looking to cover driving to and from an event, not cover whilest on the track, most insurers still decline to quote. Obviously they have been stung in the past, but I am running out of ideas. I have a long list of speciallist insurers to try but wondered if anyone out there has any ideas/suggestions/experience/pet insurance co's to try.

Thanks for any help

Phil.

Sunning hill will apparently cover on and off the track, I suggest telling them you’d like cover for the road and some track days, I wouldn’t say its a track car. Are you insuring one driver or all of you?

Well, that's the next topic for discussion with a suitable insurer. There are 6 of us, all with good driving records, so we could all be named drivers. Initally I was looking to insure the vehicle so the others could be covered third party risks on the back of their own policies.

Why tell them that you are driving to and from a track day? It's got nothing to do with them as I assume you will be getting separate insurance for the track day.

You don't tell them that you're going on holiday and the car will be left unattended at home so why tell them about the track day at all?

You just want a limited mileage, multiple driver (I assume) policy - period!

Sunninghill are good when it comes to TVR's but totally out of the league when it comes to being competitive for other cars i.e. BMW's.

For the TVR I have track cover inc. but the excess goes upto £1000.... even my wife is covered on the track... god forbid

...but if you DO mention track days... describe them as 'non competative driver improvement days'

... unless of course you are going to race (then don't)

AON Insurance will cover road and 'non competative' track days.

I am having a track day car built and when you tell insurers it has a roll cage 99% of them flat refuse to provide any cover. An engine with double the original number of valves and twice the original horse power compounds this and makes insurance 'difficult'. I cannot yet imagine almost 300bhp/ton in a FWD car!

After trying many the only one i could find was Ian Flux insurance, somewhere like Norwich, whom said yes and were not too bad price wise. Just need to remember to take the slicks off when i finish going around the track!!

Alternative is to hire a trailer for £40 or buy one for £800, that when when one of your mob sticks it in the barriers then it will not be so bad.

Thanks for the responses so far guys, I have had a couple of quotes from a totally "out-there" £1030 to a much more reasonable £350. The vehicle for those who didn't look at my profile is a Nova with a 2Ltr 16v Astra motor. I will be trying some of the other insurers next week. If you could attach a web address, hyperlink or phone number with suggested insurers that would be great.

The trailer thing has been suggested, not least for the reason of "what happens when we bend it?" and we can borrow one. Problem is none of us have tow-bars, so we would have to borrow a tow barge as well.

As ever I think my mistake was being too honest, and I may "modify" my approach in future enquiries!!
