Hi,

My 1st post on watches, generally on motors however have a few watches but just got my 1st vintage.

I've been handed down a nice Omega Geneve automatic, it was bought new ~1972.

It needs a new glass, crown, strap and general service/clean - so would appreciate recomenedations of where I could get this done. I'm Edinburgh based but would courier to the right place.

The gold is worn in places, do you know if it's worthile having cases replated re cost and finish?

For those interested - the model on the inside back is 161.009 SP (bought in Spain so is that the SP?), gold 20 microns. Serial # starts 28 so will be circa 1969 movement? 552 also there which i assume means something.

I have clear photos however my photobucket is playing up. I can try another hosting site if anyone is interested in this sort of thing?

thanks for any help

http://www.martinsjewellers.co.uk/ in Glasgow. Never used them personally, but they seem highly regarded. Got an old Seiko that I would like to give to my son, it needs a new crown, so I may pop it in to them as they are less than 2 miles from me. HTH

Had my Omega Seamaster serviced here a few months ago:

www.swisstimeservices.com

They are the official Omega UK service company. They are based in Essex.

Excllent job done and a speedy turnround, not cheap though.

You could give them a call to discuss the work needed. They do not proceed without providing you with an estimate and having your agreement.

Thanks for the 2 so far, I've emailed them with pictures.

I'm looking into an autowinder case for it, does anyone know of a target rate or turn specification for this mechanism (552) Automatic.

I've read that some winders can can bet set left, right or both directions. Also number of turn per hour and rest, etc? Not sure if this is very important as a person wearing it could be doing all sorts of wrist movements during any day?

thanks again

I have a Seamaster of a similar vintage so would be very interested in the results of this. Are you having the case refurbed?

Service, clean, glass, crown & strap in this time around. Only one agent offered re-plating (not the one it's going to), so will see how it looks before making this decision at a later date.

Nice Cal 565 movement there. Has it been regulated well? Mine keeps to within a minute in 24hrs...

Could I ask the approx. cost to get this work done, and where did you choose ? Also how long did the work take ?
I have a similar 1960's Omega Seamaster auto 'quick date' which is original and has a very nice patina, but really needs a service as it gains a little. The watch was given to me by my uncle, and, as far as I know, has never been opened since new.

Id recommend either Brian at Time Repairs or Steve at Ryte Time.

Did you end up at Martins after all? I've heard good things about them and wondered if it was them that dealt with this - or was the jeweller just a conduit to Omega? God job either way.

Any advice on where in the midlands to get an old Omega serviced? my parents have my grandfather's old Omega Speedmaster Constellation, I'm not 100% on it's exact model, also any idea how much a service is likely to cost?

I had the work carried out by Cheal, took about 2 weeks in all and £140 including the strap, glass, crown and crown stem.

I've only had the watch back yesterday, not measured it's timekeeping as yet.

It's a 552 cal.
