Although I may be in the minority I actually prefer the look of the older car.

I suspect there is a lot more in it than you might imagine. I doubt the panels are straight swaps, for starters. But even if they were, to obtain a cosmetic look you'd need at least the following:

Bonnet
Plus hinges, insulation, washer jets

Front bumper
Plus mounting kit, fog lights, grille, under grille, possibly slam panel

Lights
Potentially may need wiring adapter/loom

Front wings
Plus silly side vent trims

Sill covers

Rear bumper
Plus exhaust trims and possibly exhaust back boxes, rear lights, possibly mounting kit

Wheels and tyres

I'm sure there will be more.

Are you planning on keeping the car for a long time, as what you're thinking of doing will surely affect resale value?

If I was looking at a pre-facelift era SL that had body parts of the post-facelift variant I'd assume it had been in some sort of major accident at some point and repaired with newer parts and panels.

+1 - we have a 2003 SL500 and it is beautiful - and especially in comparison to the new (on steriods/chisled) SL
