Watch boxes - recommendations?
Discussion
This forum has been partly responsible for my 'couple of watches' turning into a collection. I've always liked watches so my girlfriend bought me a watch box (made by 'Hillwood' - some lacquered polished wood job) that holds 6 watches, a good few years ago.
This box is now full and another 5 watches are sitting on top of the ones there. It's a mess. And I've got three more to add - one in Customs awaiting clearance, one in Switzerland being serviced, and another on the way from China.
Basically I need more storage for my collection! I'd prefer a box with the oval pads that I can put all the watches in, and easily pick and choose as necessary. I could just put the watches in the boxes they were bought with, but it's inconvenient. And a display case would be nice so I can admire them when I'm not wearing them
I'm not convinced at all of the benefits of 'watch winders' so does anyone have recommendations for decent watch storage boxes, preferably with a glass lid or some way of displaying them? I don't want to spend a fortune as I'd rather spend the money on watches.
TIA.

http://windit.co.uk/products/?c=Six%20Plus rapport ones look v nice, but...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0021DVLY8/ref=asc_df_B...
for 8 watches seems quite reasonable in a display case.
I found these were pretty good, but some were quite pricey for a small D cell battery motor and a few springs. I have a friend who got a very nice one from asia at a very reasonable price- ill find out the make in a few days and repost.
Most manufacturers of winders suggest winders help prevent oil build up as they keep the oil distributing and therefore prolong accuracy.
Im not so sure, but a if your storing a watch for a few days, a winder does seem the best way to keep them dust free and its nice to have all the watches in a display cabinet.

I wanted one with a glass top and all that jazz. The missus denied me this simple wish, it was a step too far and was accused of venturing onto the wrong side of metrosexuality.
I just did a search for 'wooden box' in ebay and got a nice handmade dark wood box for the price of the postage. Made myself a secret compartment in the bottom for tools and polish and stuff and just throw the watches in.
Like you say though, the thing is full now.

I bookmarked this thread a while ago: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...

The Rapport boxes are fairly pricey but are top quality. I have one with a tray for 8 watches on cushions which lifts out to reveal cut outs for a further four watches to be stored flat.
Have a look a Blowers website for ideas - I got mine from there along with a leather slip case for traveling - great services.

Many thanks - looks ideal for what I had in mind As to the others - many thanks, but Rapport winders weren't really what I wanted - as I'm not sold on the benefits of winders and I'd rather not spend the money on something I don't really see the value of.
Just something simple and cheap. I've got a posh 6-watch box from my girlfriend - the plan is never to let the 'expensive' watch collection exceed 6 watches and then all my other 'affordables' can go in the big, cheaper box
So far this means the 'posh' box will be half full (Breguet, JLC reverso, IWC aquatimer) and I can move the rest into the bigger box. Or do I put the Speedy and the Sinn into the 'posh' box? They both cost less than a grand... decisions decisions... Equally, my christmas present from my girlfriend this year is one of the BHI tourbillons - less than £500 but *definitely* worthy of a place in the 'posh' box, don't you think?
But even the cheapest (the two Swatches, one with the new ETA automatic mechanical, the other a Snowpass quartz) deserve respect and a proper spot in a watch box (as opposed to lying in a heap on top of the other watches) so I'll definitely get a bigger cheap-and-cheerful box.

Though it sounds like you're sorted.
(btw, not having to reset a few watches makes a winder worthwhile to me )
thread resurrection.
I'm after a combined watch/cufflink box as a present, so high quality.
There seem to be very few on the market. The only one I've found so far that is the Hillwood boxes. Either the 1 watch or 4 watch https://www.hillwood.co.uk/shop/cufflink-boxes/cam...
Does anyone know of good alternatives?

How many watches? Dulwhich Designs have a 10 watch box with slide out accessory drawer
http://www.thegiftery.co.uk/watch-boxes-winders-c1...
the link also has other options at the bottom of the page
For higher end, I would go straight to Aspinal of London, really beautiful pieces
