I`m sure I saw a thread somewhere concerning speed cameras that are actually in some of the london tunnels, can anyone give a heads up on which tunnels to be aware of, I assume the TT will possibly make you aware of their existance before you enter the tunnel providing its within the distance that the TT reads them from, I know its not a race or anything , but its so easy sometimes to get carried away, and then be gutted when a letter drops on the doormathehe

Clive,

Cameras are everywhere, my top tip would be to have your passenger on navigation and camera watch duty. I don't drive in London often and I find all my attention is taken up working where I'm going so the passenger assistance is very valuable.

The other thing to look out for is that some of the tunnels have a 20mph speed limit.

Not got Blues' very informative instructions to hand, so may be mentioned but there are cameras are each end of the Rotherhithe tunnel I believe and they are 20mph IIRC. Ok inside though I think but its pretty narrow!

Its only the Rotherhithe Tunnel that has 20 limit and one fixed camera in each direction, its also very narrow (and bumpy) but great echo effect of the shiny tiled walls!! You guys will love it!:-)))

Blackwall Tunnel southbound varies from 40 to 30....the speed limit signs are in a light array in the ceiling as you go thru every 100m or so.....but I dont know of any cameras in the southbound tunnel.

Northbound is a 30 only.....and its only northbound that has SPECS....but I don't think they have been activated yet.

I went thru last weekend and they still had the covers on. The "exit" SPECS cameras are in two different locations after you exit the tunnel. If you go up the slip road to the left they are halfway up the slip road, otherwise they are about 400m further along if you stay on the same road.....thats one to watch.

Limehouse Link Tunnel is a 30 all the way thru with three checkpoints, start, middle and end and is a VERY strict 30, the cameras are always on!

Theres a very short tunnel at the Northern end of Waterloo Bridge, thats 30, but never seen a camera there.

Also there's a "tunnel", (which is more of a building built of the top of the road) along the City end of the Embankment, that has had new cameras installed at the eastern end.

Thats all the tunnels I can think of in London......

Forgot to mention.....

On the northbound Blackwall Tunnel approach, the limit goes from 50 to 30 and theres a fixed camera on the left about 300m after the 30 signs and just after the road narrows from 3 lanes to 2.....

I *think* I got flashed, I don't think it was from a camera on the other side flashing another car. Arse. So will I get an option to do one of those "speeding punishment days" and pay the £60 instead of getting points? Had just got rid of my last 3 points and I would have had a clean licence.

Unfortunately you have that dreadful 14 day wait, to see if a NIP lands on your mat. For what its worth, i've had a couple of "moments" like that. Sometimes it is one of the other Tunnel Runners with a camera flash. Fingers crossed for you, & well done for travelling so far

Fist see if you get a NIP within 14 days. As it's a Sunday today they effectively lose 2 whole days too - they won't start on them before tomorrow, and it needs to be on your doormat Saturday fortnight.

Then check out pepipoo for your options...

Was a bright double flash, deffo not from a camera frown Just found this though:

============

POLICE are removing film from roadside speed cameras, or raising the limit at which they take pictures, to cut the cost of prosecuting motorists.

The Association of Chief Police Officers conceded that the practice was "not a good road safety message". The admission that police are cutting down on camera use came from Geoffrey Markham, assistant chief constable of Essex and association spokesman on speed enforcement.

It follows findings in the 1997 Lex report on motoring that two-and-a-half million drivers recalled being flashed by cameras as they speed but only one in eight - around 300,000 - were prosecuted.

Many forces are having difficulties in meeting the extra administrative costs involved".

No extra funding had been made available to police and, although accident prevention might be a priority for some forces, it did not feature in the Government's national policing objectives.

Forces "are dealing with this particular resource problem in a variety of ways, which can include not placing film in cameras and adjusting prosecution thresholds" - a reference to raising the speed at which cameras take a picture.

For example, a camera might be reset at 50mph rather than 45mph in some areas. Leaving cameras empty would still be a deterrent because motorists slowed on seeing cameras. The association was unable to say how much the system was costing police or which forces were particularly affected by the costs.

The AA also supports the setting of speed trigger limits at a "realistic level," balanced against resources available and chances of prosecuting offenders.
The Home Office said the Government was considering the general funding of the speed camera system.

In some 30mph zones in Kent the fixed penalty only comes in above 45mph and only if someone drives over 57mph will they be taken to court.

======================================

However what with it being London I bet they prime all those cameras for the huge revenue it will create....but I did get flashed in Norwich once and nothing came of it. So fingers crossed.

I've just been looking through some of the videos I took from the car, and the cameras are the small yellow boxes with a slot in them. I've not seen them "oop north" yet, so I don't know if they flash or not.

They can be seen at 28-30s, top right of the screen in this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wlljRvaurM
