Spyker Relocates To The UK

Dutch supercars to be built in Coventry from next year

Spyker Cars is relocating its manufacturing operation from the Netherlands to Coventry, in a surprise move the company says will bring considerable improvements in manufacturing efficiency.

Sales, marketing and the racing operation will apparently remain in situ at the firm's HQ in Zeewolde, and while it's good news for the UK it may not be such a good Christmas for the factory workers affected in Zeewolde. Full details are contained in the Spyker press release below.

Official Press Release:
Spyker Cars N.V., manufacturer of exclusive premium sports cars, announces today that it will relocate vehicle assembly to its supplier, CPP (Manufacturing) Ltd, UK.

By relocating its assembly lines from Zeewolde to Coventry, Spyker will achieve considerable improvements in efficiency and substantial cost-reductions. The relocation is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Of the 135 Spyker employees in the Netherlands, approximately 45 jobs will be directly affected. A full social plan will be prepared in consultation with the trade unions, and Spyker will work with the trade unions to assist the employees concerned in finding a new job. Engineering, Corporate staff functions, Sales, After-Sales, Marketing and "Spyker Squadron", the company's Works' GT race team, will remain in Zeewolde. Management will continue its efforts to reduce costs and further headcount reduction may not be excluded.

Victor R. Muller, CEO of Spyker Cars stated: "In these challenging times, a small manufacturer like Spyker has to find ways to reduce costs as well as improve its efficiency. By relocating vehicle assembly to CPP (Manufacturing), which was Spyker's very first contracting partner at the inception of our company in 2000 and has been one of our most trusted partners ever since, we secure the future of our business".

"With approximately half of our vehicles' parts and components sourced in the UK, and virtually all key suppliers being located there, moving closer to our suppliers and engineering partners will result in substantial savings and tangible efficiency improvements".

"We realise that jobs will be affected in the Netherlands but we believe this move is necessary under the current economic circumstances and is in the best interest of the company and all of its stakeholders," he added.

Brendan O'Toole, Managing Director of CPP (Manufacturing), stated: "We have worked closely with Spyker since 2000 when we built their very first prototype chassis, and have grown with Spyker to become one of the leading low-volume manufacturers in the industry. We will maintain the highest standards of quality in the assembly of Spyker vehicles, while at the same time achieving significant cost reductions and operational efficiencies for Spyker".

"By 2000 the company was successful in winning contracts for fully-engineered concept-phase prototypes and projects have since been undertaken on behalf of clients such as Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls Royce and Dutch super-car manufacturer Spyker

CPP currently manufactures the complete aluminium chassis and body assemblies for all Spyker road and race cars

As manufacturers of quality and performance cars continually seek to reduce weight through increased use of specialist materials, CPP has the expertise to deliver high quality cost-effective prototype parts and low-volume manufacturing solutions."

That makes sense.

Yes, plus skilled workforce in the UK and a centralised operation.

Agreed, we need a return of more UK industries.

I read an article recently explaining how the UK 'is set' to be the next big software enginnering country, and will start to challenge the US in the coming years.

Hopefully the various UK industries will continue to expand in specalist/new areas throughout the digital age.

Im sorry? In which idiot magazine did you read that piece of crap?

We already *are* one of the biggest software engineering countries, hell outside of the US we are probably the next bloody biggest!

Yep, UK has the best specialised/skilled motor industry engineering workforce in the world. Did you notice on the CPP website "Case Study 1 Spyker Zagato designed show car. Geneva 2007. Total build time from receipt of CAD data; 3.5 weeks." Three and a half weeks!!!! Bloody hell. Wrecks to Riches can stuff that in their pipe and smoke it!

The Spyker in WAR with Jet Li sounds awesome and looks cool when the door lifts up when he walks up to it and unlocks it.
