Being a admirer of watches and long time fan of all things Porsche, i have decided to combine both passions and to upgrade my watch collection.

I currently have a 1960s Omega Seamaster date (which has massive sentimental value)a bit like this but on the bead of rice bracelet:

and one of these:

.

The Seiko is a bit big for my wrist, so i am contemplating trading this up for a Porsche Design watch.

My questions are:

Are Porsche Design watches actually any good as a timepiece?
Any particular models to look at? Without having to add lots of extra money.
Any particular models to avoid?

Ray,

I have a Porsche Design watch, model PO11 on a steel bracelet, as here:

Bought in 2001. I wear it regularly although not when I'm doing manual stuff etc. It's a great watch, very comfy etc.
Never had any problems with it and now I'm thinking maybe it's time for a service. It's an automatic so compared to something quartz it does not keep perfect time, maybe it loses a minute a week.

What I really like about it is the clarity of the design..simple but good.

I can recommend this model. I know nothing about other models.

Hope this helps.

R.

Have a look at the original, Ferdinand Porsche designed, Orfina PD chronos - chronomaster usually has a few in. Not new but original.

ETA - http://www.chronomaster.co.uk/porsche_design.htm - however it's gone since I looked last time - it gives you an idea though.

More info on the varients here - http://brown-snout.com/horology/articles/orfina_po...

Various manufacturers have actually produced the PD watch ranges over the years - Orfina (as mentioned above), IWC and currently Eterna (which was taken over by Porsche Design AG in about 2003). The older models seem very collectable and they do have a certain coolness about them - the PO11 chornograph model was worn in the TV series The Professionals as well as by Tom Cruise in some scenes of Top Gun (due to later re-shoots, in some scenes he sports a Rolex) and you're unlikely to see anyone else wearing one.

If you want a modern one, try here: www.watches.co.uk or http://www.watches.co.uk/watch.php?wid=0726P

Regarding what Porsche Design watches were worn in The Professionals, I'm sure Bodie and Doyle wore PDs but I also think they were one of the the models with the fully blackened case and bracelet. I cannot remember the technical name for such blackening! I have read somwhere that it wears off too.

R.

PS: I think mine was manufactured by Eterna before PD acquired that company.
