given all our obvious love for the old timers and golovkin's great win on Saturday night I thought i'd stick this video here. great watch all about the lost art of shifting that these current eastern block fighters seem to be bringing back.....

He is just a bit good and must be quite a frightening prospect to opponents striding the ring throwing those hooks with intent, I think it's going to take a very brave man to move into him and just throw down for an all out slug fest before he gets close to looking uncomfortable, I can't see anyone keeping him on the end of a jab, not even Floyd (if they could agree a catchweight)

Apparently Andre Ward wants Golovkin fight..

Ward-Golovkin would be a brilliant fight, as would Froch-Golovkin. But, as was mentioned in the post-fight analysis, Golovkin doesn't look a big middleweight. Fair enough, Rubio missed the weight by a couple of pounds but when they stepped in the ring, there was over half a stone difference in weight. As such, it could be there is more sense - as well as incentive - for Golovkin to be looking at the lower weights, where there are some massive potential fights; Mayweather, Alvarez, Cotto (should he step back down to Light-Middleweight as is being suggested), Lara...Tim Bradley is talking about moving up from Welterweight, so that could be an option too.

ward golovkin would be great but I agree that he's more likely to go down than up. he was a couple of lb inside the limit on Saturday and while Rubio isn't a massive middleweight, golovkin looked a division smaller.

cotto has said it's a virtual lock that he's going back down to light middle and that fight would be huge. also, mayweather/pacquiao/canelo etc. are all close enough to fight if Gennady goes down. he could go up, but I see him looking tiny next to froch/ward and co.

Golovkin is 5ft 10 1/2, Froch is 6ft 1 and Ward 6ft.

Most of the Super welter and welter weight guys are shorter than 5ft 10, Mayweather is only 5ft 8, Canelo 5ft 9.

None of this means anything in the real world but if I had to bet I'd bet on Golovkin doing ok going up I think he's too big (when you consider he punches like a freak anyway) for most of the welter/super welter guys.

What an amazing video. I really learned something there.

I do admire just how important footwork is in boxing and the positioning of your feet for maximum power- shifting is a great way of maximising the power of both left and right hooks.

Good footwork is needed for defence, and I think Groves is a good example of this in how he slips away from the ropes and corners. Pretty much how he beat DeGale. Obviously there are plenty of better examples out there though.
Just got round to watching this. Agree it is an excellent instructional montage. I was actually reminded of a not dissimilar technique that Mike Tyson favoured, where he would effectively half-shift, partly to close the distance (important for someone usually at a reach disadvantage) but also to square himself up so he could use either hand to throw hooks (and typically would hook with both hands in an attack) especially to the body. And, as with Duran, it was an old-school trainer honing his technique; in this case Cus D'Amato.

Incidentally, the person who produced that segment has done a follow-up piece on Golovkin's defensive attributes; another fascinating watch. Whoever Rusalka Afterglow is, they really know their stuff...:

Boxer, puts referee in hospital!

http://news.sky.com/story/1357743/boxer-banned-aft...

Disgusting footage which does nothing but harm to boxing. furious

His opponent (who'd just beaten him in ring) runs away like a little girl leaving the ref to take a real pummelling before others could get to him.

Hopefully he'll never fight again.

gonna watch that in a bit nice one fella.....my only misgiving with this technique is that IF your opponent can time you coming in mid-shift you can be put on your arse quite easily being too square on. I was watching it all thinking "yeah, i'm gonna fight like this" but I was always trained to box the way I do ie. as a southpaw move to the right to keep them off your fighting line and open for backhand lefts off the lead.it'd be my luck on Saturday morning to go in and try to do a golovkin only to end up on my arse taking a shot square on!

Terrible, but not as "good" as the Tae Kwon Do guy who head kicked the referee in the Olympics.
