It's a 10 part series on how a Mercedes G wagen is bought , stripped back and rebuilt as new by an expert team of G-wagen mechanics.

It's in German but it's very very good.

I never knew the G-wagen was so over-engineered. What an awesome piece of machinery. No wonder they are so expensive.

The show in the German equivalent to Wheeler Dealers (though its much longer and goes into much more detail).

Enjoy all W463 fans!

Excellent link - really loved all those 'Born' / 'Reborn' that Mark Evans did a few years back. Shame my German is 'not good'. I gathered that everyone seemed to be either an expert or a specialist.

That must be the most expensive old G wagen - other than some special owned by a star or state ruler. Would love to know what the bill was - if someone was paying for the work. Especially as its 'only' an old 280, rather than an AMG or CDI.

Wasn't sure about the colour to start with - grew on me a bit towards the end. But given the spare had a black rim I would have preferred to see all the rims in black. And its so much better without that bull bar.

Shame they didn't fit electric windows - and personally I would have liked it to have been an auto. There was a nice 1988 280 SWB for sale locally a couple of months ago - beauty - about 90k and I believe from the collection of a local family (also includes still several (of each) Mercedes, Porsche, Bentley, Ferrari, BMW, Range Rover etc) which explains the quality. Went for just over £5k - damn. Lack of personal storage.

Did you see the Xmas Top Gear special last night in South America - shame there wasn't a G wagen in there. And take a look at the ORC website - there are loads of extras - the snow ploughs may be handy at the present time !

To be honest, I'm no fan of that beige colour they ended up painting that G280 with but it sort of suits the car.

The bill must have been massive; bits are incredibly hard to source and the car is SO over engineered - but they're all experts. I also get the feeling they'll be keeping the car in some sort of private collection.

Just to think, that old 21 year old G-wagen is still more capable off-road than today's 4x4's. Says it all.

If you look on www.mobile.de there are tonnes of G-wagens for sale (inc my favourite, the G55 AMG). Germany is full of them. It's a shame we don't see more of them over here. They really are quite special.

Glass bead blasting for the alloy parts. The body shell paint stripping was done by heat due to lots of layers and filler.

The processes showing an arc are the final coating. The axles are zinc-coated after being grit blasted. The operator shows the nozzle of the zinc-coating device, which uses a zinc wire, melted by high currency, and then distributed by airflow. Later, the manifolds are alloy coated, which then withstand 600°C smile
