Off to Herne Hill tomorrow afternoon from the North, what's the best route to take when I reach the end of the M1? Googlemaps suggests the following route: http://www.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&am...
Is this the best route or is there a better one to avoid traffic or something?

I'd be more inclined to take the North Circular around to the end of the M4, take the A4 in to Earl's Court, then the Embankment until Vauxhall Bridge. The Google Maps route uses the A5/Edgware Road which is very much a stop/start route.

Had already left by the time of the last two posts. Thought about going North circular then M4 through Hammersmith etc, but just went through Kilburn and down Park Lane in the end. Park lane and south of the river was fine, but the 5 odd miles down the A5 through Kilburn was as you said very much a stop start route, took getting on for an hour! Will probably take the North circular next time.

You should take the Hendon Way/Finchley road route from the bottom of the M1, then down Baker Street to Park Lane - Far quicker than the A5 (about half the number of traffic lights and dual carriageway all the way to Swiss Cottage).

North circular route is fine also, but don't attepmt it in rush hour - How something that becomes as small as a residential side street in places can be a ring road to a capital city is beyond my comprehension!
