Don't they have to be fitted by the helmet manufacturer?

I have a Bell ultra helmet and the Bell website says:

They come with a pre-drilled shell to allow correct retro-fitting of the post clips by approved Hans® technicians

Demon Tweeks and GPR dont seem to know if they can or can't.

The other problem is that the MSA say that it has to have the correct FIA sticker on it.

I thought that up to and including last year they were only approved by the FIA if fitted at the time of manufacture. But I also understood this year the rules had changed and they could be fitted by approved technicians.

Does the blue book shed any light on it?

All the blue book says is

It is Permitted to incorporate an FIA-approved Hans
Device fitted in accordance with FIA regulations.

Trying to find the FIA reg that covers this is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

Also if they where only approved by the FIA if fitted at the time of manufacture why on earth do they sell helmets with the holes pre drilled for hans posts.
Bell want something in the region of £200-£250 to fit the hans posts which I think is a liberty. If the FIA want to make racing safer then they should make it easier for the club racer to be able to get these fitted easily and at a fair cost imo.

I had my Arai fitted 'through' GPR, they send them up to Pheonix distribution... http://www.phoenixnw.co.uk/ ( Arai importer ) and they do them, stick the sticker on and send them back. If you're close to them then you can go and get it done while you wait. So I think you need to find the details for your helmet brand official importer.

If your regs dont require the use of HANS then you could drill and fit yourself, just dont take the HANS to scrutineering.

But the helmet is scruitineered and if it dose not have the right sticker on for Hans post fitment they wont let you use it

That's not true.

Alternatively, just get your ears pierced and tie a length of garden twine from one ear round the back of the headrest and then attach it to the other ear. I have done this and it works a treat.

That's OK providing you have an FIA headrest and FIA twine.

I have just received an email from Phoenix (Arai importer)as the FIA Sticker on the back of my GP5 isn't straight and i'm getting it painted they told me the FIA sticker must be in place as it's all to do with the Hans post if it's not on no good for racing.

Talked to the MSA and they say that if it is not up to FIA spec which includes a sticker to say it has been fitted by an authorised fitter then the helmet cannot be used.

I bought a Bell helmet last year from the states because my brother was over there on business, when I asked if it was going to come with a sticker to say they had fitted the posts they didn't have a clue was I was going on about (and I did translate it to decal).
Never had any probs at scrutineering last year, I was asked once, told them the story and that was it.

Yes, but the question is whether an aftermarket outfit can be an 'authorized fitter' or whether the helmet manufacturer must do it at the time of build.

Presumably if your series/discipline does not mandate HANS devices then you can do as you please if you choose to fit one?

Technicaly your not alowed to do anthing to your lid that changes its structure. Therefore drilling and fitting your own HANS post's invalidates your lid.

In short if it doesnt have the correct sticker, its illegal. You don't have to use a HANS of course but if you do, do it properly or not at all is the moral here.

The lid is already pre drilled. I just need to find somewere to get the hans post fitted as I am reluctant to spend a fortune sending it back to Bell

Just talked to technical at the MSA regarding this and they say:

An approved fitter (ie stand 21) can retro fit to a pre drilled helmet and apply the sticker. Without the correct sticker the helmet will not be allowed to be used.
