whats the best wheels and tyres for off roading i am new to the ways and i am just useing all terrains at the moment

I'd find the forum for your vehicle as some tyres suit different vehicles.

Personally I run BF Goodrich Mud Terrains (the new pattern) which are much quieter than the old MT's. That said they aren't as quiet as AT's and there is a noticeable drop off in wet weather braking.

Simex (or a copy) or Super Swamper Boggers would be about the best off road.

Absoultely and totally unsuitable (and often illegal) on road.

As previous poster said- BFG MTs will get you 97% of the way that simexes will, but they are driveable on road.

Not exactly true, I run Simex Jungle Trekker II's. I've used them on road for years and done 1000's of miles on them as well as off road work.

Simex are fine on road long as you give em a little bit of respect same as any mud tyre

yep but they aren't much good for someone who only really uses A/Ts at the moment- Its a hell of a step up to a set of proper tyres. And to be fair simex ETs (never run jungles so won't comment) wear blooming quickly- went through my first set in about 11,000 miles- then realised that having a set of BFG MTs could be a much cheaper option to run when not in competition.

And boggers quite often aren't E marked and whilst they have some US DOT approval quite often that approval doesn't meet that laid down for C&U regs or SVA regs.

Guess if the OP wants the best off road tyres money can buy then yep he is looking at Simex or similar, but he should be aware of some of the pitfalls associated with running an extremely off road biased tyre! Especially when they are what- £210 each from devon?

Are simex really worth the extra investment over re-treads for offroading? I've split one of my older tyres on flint before and thought "oh well its only about £60 to replace" but then are simex that much tougher that they wouldnt have split?

Currently using Insa Turbo special tracks on my 90 and find they're great offroad and ok on the black stuff just noisy.

In the bigger sizes i.e 35 inches+ theres only the fedima scirocco available and there £160-£170 each so not that much cheaper than the simex plus simex are available in a wider variety of sizes to.

Think I depends. My Simex's seem to have lasted pretty good and def run better on the road than other remoulds I've used.

However I don't often drive on really flinty surfaces. If you do then maybe the cost would be prohibative. One thin I've heard mention is remoulds lose their edge easier and sooner.

And as someone else said sizes. I run 33.11.50R15 although they measure about 34" tall. If you want bigger than a 265/75 then it's difficult to find in a remould.

I know Simex are popular in Australia. And in the US Interco are very popular. But they guys in the US will run 35-42" tyres fairly regualry.

i'm a fan of tall and skinny im after some 900-16's for my series 2 about 34-36 inches high depending on the make but only 9 inches wide. Had an ex military 109 that had them fitted as standard and it never got stuck!

I compete, but only in ALRC events and they have a tyre sixe limit of 33" unless you are in a Forward Control.

I'm sure the debate will go on and on, on which is better big or small tyres. I personally love the look of big tyres hence I have what I've got. But I've seen 80" "specials" on 205 section tyres go anywhere anything else was.

Also remember bigger tyres don't just need beefed up diffs and the like. You also need more power and lower gearing. On a Defender 4.10:1 or 4.75:1 with the LT230 transfer box.

I've put Simex Jungle Trekkers 34/10.5X16 on my Defender 110 td5 a few months ago. They are fabulous off-road, but treat them with respect on tarmac. The right pressure is the key (I run mine at 25 psi on tarmac, and 15 psi off-road). Fuel consumption is bad, low 20s, compared to low 30s of my previous tyres, Durango MT (255/85x16).

But can anyone tell me how many on-road miles expect on the Jungle Trekkers before they're worn out ???
